1. Hi, have you succesfully burned other ISO files recently in your XP Computer using Nero?

Sometimes the aspi layer can get corrupted (I seem to remember that happening rarely once or twice).
But if the problem is somehow with Nero, you could possibly try AnyToISO.

https://crystalidea.com/anytoiso/download

There are other windows programs that will write an ISO to CD(RW) (blind write and stuff) but I have used this when there have been big problems.

2. If you can boot usb sticks, this app will put a Puppy to a usb drive painlessly as your comp is probably bios orientated (as opposed to uefi).
I'm running Bionic 32 19.03 in legacy mode with no apparent problems.

https://linuxliveusb.com/

(Other apps are available, but use grub which is devilish to remove when trying to solve problems).

Then at least you could see what the problem is by trying to burn a cd or two from Ziggy's PBurn or Peasy Burn and Disc Tools in Puppy .

By the errors it is not burning correctly.

Are you sure this DVD writer can write anything to a disk?
If yes it will.

Try using a different program to do the iso image burn to the disk.
Make sure to select image burn or iso image burn.
Use a low burn speed.
No higher than 8 for burn speed.

When done correctly.
there will be a bunch of different files on the disk.
These are the files that are in the iso package.

This is suppose to be how to do it in Nero:

Quote:
Download the ISO CD image to a folder on your computer.
Insert a blank CD in your CD-RW drive.
Start Nero Burning
Follow the wizard steps to select Data CD creation.
When the wizard closes, click Burn Image on the File menu.
In the Open dialog box, select the ISO file, and then click Open
In the wizard, click Burn to write the image to the CD.

Always give Image Burn a go, which used to be the recommended burning software at one time. With old machines it was necessary to select the slowest burn rate to get a good CD or DVD. https://www.imgburn.com/

PostPosted: Sat 11 Apr 2020, 07:00    Post subject: How to make a bootable CD in Windows.
Subject description: analysis of CD log

Speaking generally I have burnt many iso image files to CDs (but not DVDs) using Windows XP and Nero. This includes uPupBB32.

Looking at your (very helpful) CD log you can see the "CD" writer set up, begin the recording process. The time-stamp shows that the writing process took a little less than 2 minutes; the system (h/w and s/w) went thru the process. Then, after a very short time (a second or so) into the verification process the "wheels fell off". In other words I see error, error ...

At this point, I must remind you to read the log slowly and THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU READ. Many computer types (who often think they are very clever and don't need to read slowly) lose the value recorded in the log by failing to read/comprehend. Forgive me if my advice is not needed. I have seen may people, more capable than me, fail to read/think about information before their eyes.

So ... the system appears to get thru the writing process, but quickly finds errors when verifying the data. Possible causes are (1) Dust on the head or disk. (2) A worn positioning mechanism. (3) Some very nasty hardware bug in the signal chain. For example: The system uses the data is reads to regenerate the clock, so that the data reconstruction is synchronized with the incoming data stream. Chatter in the drive bearings will de-sync the clock to the data-stream. Ditto some failed chip.

So ... what does this mean? Get a disk you previously recorded. Can you read that disk? If 'yes' then you can have some confidence that the head is clean and the laser is good and the mechanism has no chatter. Ditto for head-alignment. This isn't a complete check, but it's a useful check.

Try recording and playing a music disk. That will give you some confidence in the system - away from this as a data recording. Consider buying more brand-new disks. You might even get a complete batch of disks that are bad ... eg if the whole box was left in the sun (somewhere).

Or ... copy the uPupBB iso file to a thumb drive and go to a friend's house (if that is possible in this age of the dreaded Corona virus). Or just tell a friend to try burning a DVD - just to get you 'flying'. Once you have one puppy working you can generate many others .... The Puppy has CD burning apps in the system software.

If you are starting to use 'Da Pup' then persevere. I can tell you a working Puppy is very nice. Once you have the system working YOU can keep it working. Always keep your system software separate from your work and apps. Do NOT boot different versions of Puppy on your system or you may cry ... One PC - one Puppy. Ask me how I know this ....

All the best,

Leslie

Subject description: One computer - one version of 'da Pup'

The "Q". Please explain why it is better to use only one Puppy on a PC?

I say that because of experience. I run several computers - several laptops (old) and an equally old tower. All about 15yo.

Sometime - early in 2019 - I began to experiment booting different versions of 'da Pup'. Tahr, Stretch, dPupBB (32), Lucid, 5v7 and so on. Perhaps even 4.2 On every machine. Not every Pup will boot on every computer - some laptops lack PAE and some Puppies expect PAE.

I switched between Puppies without rhyme or reason - just whatever happened to be close to hand. I experimented burning different Puppies to different USB drives with different formats (and so on). A frenzy of madness. At the same time I didn't keep close track on the thumb-drives I used for 'work' files.

Somehow (and without subsequent investigation) I lost several days work (mainly spreadsheet/gnumeric). Yikes! Sadness! Gloom!

I came to the conclusion that poor naming practice (and esp for save-files) was (in part) the problem. I think one 'pup' thought it was some other 'pup' and wrote 'stuff' where it shouldn't. I never really understood the real problem.

Since that time I have a strict rule. One Pup per machine.
Long before that I enforced another rule. Never - ever - keep the OS and work on the same drive.
That rule began when I used Windows; the rule applies to both Windows and Linux.

Now I move my WORK between machines freely, but I ALWAYS use the same Pup on the same machine.
Just my experience, just a rule I made.

All the best from AU, where I am virally house-bound and very happy.
I love peace and quiet!

Reading the logging file (above) I note that there are gaps in the log.
I see a failure on sector 383 ... 415 ... 447 ... and so on.
I infer that there is NO failure on sectors 348 .. 414 or 416 .. 447.
I deduce that your device wrote many sectors successfully, but failed intermittently. The advice given in other postings is valid.
Try burning more slowly. Definitely buy or borrow another disk.
Good luck. Leslie
