PERMANENTLY disable updates on Windows 10

From Whirlpool forums...

Once again Micro Sh.t can't help themselves and keep releasing updates
which may eventually make you keep subscribing annually,
plus accessing your data to the cloud.

Crazie: from the post below.

" Someone might have mentioned this before; rumoured that the next major update will port everything in your "My Document" folder up to MS cloud, leaving nothing on your local drive(s).

This is to lay down the foundation of an annual storage fee on top of buying the license to run windows. Pretty much the Adobe Cloud scheme where all users will continue to pay an annual sub. fee....
that's exactly like our mobile market we have got;
the device is only secondary to your monthly/annaul line fees. "

How to PERMANENTLY disable updates on Windows 10?

sydguard has fixes on the first page that are well regarded, 5 posts?

How To Log Into Windows 7 If You Forgot Your Password

Should work for Windows 8 and 10

There are many of these videos around.

Uses notepad in the boot up sequence.

Not for amateurs.

Notepad allows you to use the file manager by opening a text files

where you can then drop down to

System 32

Find a file called sethc

Rename it to Seth whatever...say seth111

Go up to cmd and rename it to sethc

...... and keep following the video.

Files can be lost, especially encrypted files with some of these hacks.

This well produced video doesn't mention this.

Maybe because another video from someone else on Youtube
was using utilman as the way in.

I am not responsible for any stuffups.

Note: Don't forget to Change back sethc.exe to cmd.exe afterward.

Ha! ha! I didn't realise that I already posted a Puppy way for this...

But then again using no other tools this will get you in.

Cheers again, cthisbear, for updating this thread Smile
Like many on this forum I guess I consider when compared against Puppy the M$ OS a comparatively inhibitive and "risky" environment to deal with. However I keep some 2nd-hand machines duel-booted (see what I did there?) so that I can keep tabs on M$'s "catchup" progress for general usability. And for my purposes unfortunately some software in M$ is still a necessary evil. Updating Win7 to Win10 and cloning from HDD to SSD in different "legacy" and UEFI BIOS contexts while preserving Linux partitions has been a chore, to say the least Sad Your thread has been a useful lifeline for such excursions into insanity, thanks.

Quite happy with it.
Running well with the MS BS blanked out.
Now nearly 2 months.

Gave me the wrong copy ha! ha! in another language
which you can't change.

I am awaiting for the original he had; to test on an old hard drive.

His usb boot program is WiNToBootic ..Ukrainian I think.

Can't beat Puppy though.

Windows Windows 10 activation
From a Whirlpool post where the handy answer might go into the ether.

Untested by me.

Original post:

" Hi all, I recently upgraded the hardware on my PC but didn't perform a fresh install of windows.
So far I've experienced no problems apart from the Activate Windows watermark that appears randomly.
I have a legit CD key and I've entered it in several times but says it is not able to activate.
I have 0x803F7001 error when I go to the activation page.
I've tried the Microsoft virtual helper and haven't resolved the problem.
When it says it will connect me with an assistant, I get an error message after a few minutes.
I've been stuck on this for a little while now. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated "

Setting up Windows 10.

Last week a relative wanted a new laptop with Windows 10.

As this was on special and had good reviews I went for this.
HP 15s-FQ1055TU 15.6" FHD Laptop (256GB) [i7 10th Gen]

As it happens another relative gave me a Toshiba Satellite L50-B as well,
with the dreaded Windows 8(Hate) on it.

Even after I re-installed from the Toshiba Recovery Drive ( over 7 hours) shocker....
and I tried every which way to kill this slug of an OS from its' awful behaviour,
I decided to go for a Win10 trial.

Everyone here will appreciate that Radkys' Stretch ran fine on both these
laptops. After disabling UEFI Secure Boot.

Also I know it's bad form to post too much from a web page but sometimes links disappear so bad luck.

My number one rule in any Windows install is never be connected to the internet.
Install everything offline....after downloading it beforehand.
This is a game changer with Win10 or it goes downhill fast.

How to Log In to Windows 10 without a Microsoft Account
This explains it....but personally I never put in a password for a home computer or laptop.
Obviously if you have a work computer or you travel around with a laptop that is a different scenario.

Under >>>>How to Create a Local Account When Initially Setting Up Windows 10

You can create a local account when you are installing or upgrading to Windows 10.
Near the end of the process, you will encounter the “Make it yours” screen, which tells you to sign in with an existing
Microsoft account or create a new one. At that point, follow these steps:

Select the “Skip this step” option in the bottom left corner of the
“Make it yours” screen.
In the “Create an account for this PC” screen that appears, enter your name or
another identifier in the “Who’s going to use this PC?” field.

Enter a secure password and a hint that will help you remember the password in
case you forget it.
Click the “Next” button to continue the installation or upgrade.
Once the installation or upgrade is complete, your local account will be active. "

If you already set up a Windows 10 computer to use a Microsoft account to log in,
you can switch to a local account.
To do so, follow these steps:

Log in to your Windows 10 computer using your Microsoft account.
Click the “Start” button and select “Settings”.
Choose “Accounts” in the Settings window.
Select the “Your email and accounts” option in the left pane.
Click the “Sign in with a local account instead” option in the right pane.

This will bring up the “Switch to a local account” wizard.
In the first page of the wizard, enter your Microsoft account password.
Even though you signed in with your Microsoft account, you need to provide
your password again for verification purposes.
Click the “Next” button.
In the second page of the wizard, enter your name or another identifier in the
“User name” field.
Enter a secure password and a password hint.
Click “Next”.
In the last page of the wizard, review the information and then click the “Sign out
and finish” button.

Next time you log in to your Windows 10 computer, you will need to use your
new local account credentials.

Thank Austin Technology.

Youtube video here...set up offline account

I next ran Windows10Debloater.
Majorgeeks is a safe site and has even hosted some Puppies.

" There is now a GUI Application named Windows10DebloaterGUI.ps1 with buttons
to perform all of the functions that the scripts do.
This is better for the average user who does not want to work with code.

You need to download the file, and then just right click it and hit
"Run as Powershell" and the application will load up! "

Some other pages below will not be needed in their entirety because Debloater calms them down.

I have also mentioned O &O before.

Some may want to try it instead.

The Geeks have a How To video on their page as well.

Open-Shell (Formerly Classic-Start)

A great program or as the Geeks say
" Open-Shell will also bring back the start button for Windows 10, 7, 8.1
along with the toolbar and status bar for Windows and Internet Explorer making it an excellent

enhancement tool for your daily Windows experience. "
A video is on the page as well.

just testing Win 10 BitLocker was turned off by default.

Stop Windows 10 updates
I always turn off Windows updates on any machine...never had an issue.
XP, Vista, Win 7, Win8 on other peoples machines and certainly on Windows 10.
Don't believe the hype.

I am actually using the Windows Firewall under advice from someone who still does
a lot of Windows maintenance...so a first for me.
In the past I used a Zone Alarm version from around 2002 for XP,and and older
Comodo version for Vista, Win 7 without any updates in the firewall.

For Win8 I tested quite a few but ended up using a recent Comodo firewall.
Once again I never ever updated over all the years, and I have had no issues.
However I also did regular cleanouts with Puppy.

How to stop automatic updates on Windows 10.

I actually ran StopUpdates10 but I still had to turn off the updates in
Windows Store to make absolutely sure sure when I finally connected.
What a nightmare.
Just be quick and Open the Microsoft Store app.
Under App updates, turn on or off Update apps automatically to what you want.
(see screenshots below)

StopUpdates10...also has a video on the page.

So you have to listen but it's short.

I have used Malwarebytes Free for years and that is what I'm using in
Windows 10. There is no need to upgrade to the paid version.
I never have but that's your call.
The Geeks have a video as well.

There is also an Offline Installer or a standalone installer on the Malwarebytes site.

On the Whirlpool Forums the advice is stay away from Avast, very aggressive with being removed.
