Hi, I;m a newbie, and I have no idea how to instal Vera-crypt to my puppy.

I am using the precise version of puppy.

Would someone kindly make a quick guide on how to instal this, or maybe make a pet file for us all to enjoy?

thanks watchdog, but I couldn't work out ho to create a desktop link.

and thank you nilsonmorales, I have the pet file, but I also noticed you mentioned trupack.

do you think trupack is better and more secure than veracrypt?

what you want to accomplish can be done with dm-Crypt/LUKS

veracrypt isnt the only truecrypt spin off, theres another based out of switzerland, called TCNext. personally i dont hold veracrypt in much high regard, but thats just me.
also keep in mind that veracrypt cant open tc containers... so if you need backwards compat, you wont get it.

PostPosted: Sun 14 Aug 2016, 15:29    Post subject: How to install manually
Subject description: Fix FUSE/device mapper missing.

It took me a lot of looking so I thought I would give back and try and save somebody else some effort.

I have tahr-6.0.5_noPAE on a usb key used to run a Thinkpad T42 without a HD as a secure browser machine. I remove the usb key before connecting to the network.

When I tried to install veracrypt:
download installer
run installer

I got:
veracrypt needs:
FUSE library and tools
device mapper tools

veracrypt allows you to click by this message. The gui will launch and you can even run the create vol wizard. But if I try to mount the veracrypt vol it crashes and burns, even if "do not use kernel crypto services" option is checked in the vc options.

There are PETs out there for vc but the manual solution is very easy.

Before running the vc installer:
open puppy package manager
update sources (needs a bunch of cr-to-continues)
run tahr updates
search for and click to que installation of the vc prereqs. I have included all I could figure out. When searching leave off the version in case new versions come out. I.e. in the search box enter libc6 and select the latest version.:
libc6_2.19 (was already present on my machine)
libcryptsetup4_1.6.1
libopt0_1.16 (that is a zero after 'opt')
dmsetup_1.02.77 (this has sub-dependencies)
Install. I used step-by-step install. When you do it that way when you get to dmsetup it asks if you want to check dependencies. Say yes and take them all. There are about 4 sub-dependencies.
exit ppm

Install vc by launcing the vc installer. You should get no error message.
Set up a desktop launcher if you want or enter veracrypt in a terminal window.

Go for a soda.

I hope this helps.

But do you trust it? It showed up with new developers shortly after Truecrypt oddly stopped updating their program.

Hi all,

Edited Dec 2, 2019:
This is a link to a 64 bit SFSes of veracrypt version 1.23: https://www.mediafire.com/folder/7m55ivwku6fb5/.

PostPosted: Sat 30 Nov 2019, 21:22    Post subject: Veracrypt -- How To Use
Subject description: There's Nothing Intuitive about it

Caution: See Missing Libs Section

Someone on the Beginner's Section was having problems and asked what went wrong. I hadn't used veracrypt since I built the packages in the above post. Attempting to create an encrypted folder I discovered that there was nothing intuitive about it.

Fortunately, the veracrypt publishers provide a tutorial, https://www.veracrypt.fr/en/Beginner's%20Tutorial.html. Carefully following the tutorial step by step I was able to create and copy files into it; later reopen it, open the files within in the respective applications and copy files from it. I recommend that you print it as a pdf so that it is available without having to go on line.

Except as noted below, I haven't tried anything fancy. Adding its file-type to Rox's Customized Right-Click menu accomplishes nothing. However veracrypt is started the desired folder --even if it is displayed as selected-- must still be selected by clicking the "Select" button and file-browsing to it.

When you open a folder rox's window will display something to the effect that it "can not stat". There might also have been an error message. Still, I could successfully use the folder with one very significant exception. Caution: Do not attempt to directly create a file in that folder, e.g. Right-Click, New>file. Doing so seems to have destroyed the folder's previous contents without creating anything.

I have not, as yet. tried to delete a file from a veracrypt folder.

Remember, when you're finished with the folder to click the "Dismount All" button. Also, double check that veracrypt is actually closed, i.e., doesn't appear on your taskbar. Veracrypt will allow you to have two or more instances running. If you create an encrypted folder with the second open window, not having closed the first, veracrypt may still be focused on the folder selected in the first Window: you may accidentally overwrite its password and otherwise screw thing up.

IMHO, veracrypt could use some work such as warnings when you are about to do something dumb. Still, if used with care it does what is expected of it.

Missing LIbs: This is very annoying. I don't recall under which Puppies I assembled the pets and SFSes. It functioned correctly under them. I assume the 64bit version was built under Xenialpup64 as it functions properly there. Under other Puppies, after installing I ran ldd which showed "no missing libraries". I hadn't tested dpup-stretch, but after receiving a report of libraries missing I rebuilt the 32-bit and re-uploaded.

Testing the latter under Xenialpup32, again ldd reveals no missing libs. Everything works until you attempt to decrypt a folder. See attached screenshot.

Revisiting the veracrypts website revealed (a) several patches in the last couple of months, but more troubling (b) separate builds for separate major distro's versions; and (c ) a 32-bit package of questionable utility (no SSE2 support). For my purposes, it may make more sense to see if the Windows package will run under Wine than produce several 32-bit linux packages lacking SSE2 support.

PostPosted: Sun 01 Dec 2019, 15:27    Post subject: Feel free to take over building pets and SFSes

Hi all,

As a result of my exploration, discussed above, it appears that Veracrypt has almost completely abandoned support of 32-bit operating systems. Perhaps the 32-bit Windows version runs under Windows. It doesn't under Wine.

pzip, including encryption, still appears to function. See this post, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=1043312#1043312. Whatever additional security veracrypt may offer over pzip, I have no need for it; and less interest in spending the time to build multiple versions that will, respectively, run under multiple Puppy variations.

Accordingly, I have removed the 32-bit packages from mediafire. The 64-bit SFS remains. It functions under Xenialpup64 and BionicPup64. Test thoroughly under any other 64-bit Puppy before relying on it. In particular, test whether veracrypt can decompress an archive.

ADDENDUM: Duh Rolling Eyes I just discovered that Packit, built into every recent Puppy, AFAIK, will compress a folder simultaneously encrypting it. XArchive, also builtin, available thru the Right-Click Menu, will ask for the password. Laughing
