So, I finally figured out the real problem causing all of that stuff I experienced in this thread: the HDD on this machine was failing (according to the drive's SMART info, it had 7.6 years of spin time, and was failing about 50% of all operations on the first try, though it was not obvious there wa...

Well, I've been using wary 5.1.4.1 for about 2 weeks now as my primary, and while it has crashed a few times in ways I can't explain, it is NOT the same. Wary has yet to eat its savefile like LuPu was reliably eating its savefile. I've had to reboot to get X back after a crash, but have yet to need ...

rerwin said: I think the most effective route, now, is to report the problem in the wary feedback (bugs) thread, so that Barry can get involved. Ok... I have a few hours to conduct some wary tests. I wasn't particularly interested in wary, I was much more interested in lupu. But if the issue is the ...

Allrighty. The dreaded crash happened within about an hour. Downgraded alsa doesn't seem to have helped. Reboot was required to get X back, alsa broken exactly as before. Just in case you can see anything from the crashed version, I re-ran the alsa-info script, and attach the result. I'm leaving thi...

Well I gave wary5141 a spin last night, and within 2 hours I dropped it again. It seems to have similar problems to lupu528, though when X crashed (3 times in that period) it didn't drop to console shell, it dropped to console login, and I failed to login. The account credentials must be right, root...

Well, I had it crash again twice in the last hour... I've developed a plan for saving the work that is lost when not saving the session: I copy it into a real filesystem before issuing the halt. It's still really annoying to be having to workaround this issue. I really like LuPu in concept, but this...

Still hasn't crashed...
Well, I'm up to like 10 hours running without the crash that I could so reliably produce without semme's workaround with the session saves... Maybe the thread should be renamed to "session save bug" ;) I'm still going to give it a couple more days before I really decide that this has done ...

Semme's Solution
OK, based on Semme's post, I duplicated his "fix" and am testing it. Been running for hours today, no crash. I'm going to run it for a few days this way to see what the results are. For the purposes of this thread I supply a more clear description of what he did: Menu->System->Puppy Event ...

The End
OK, after a week of fighting it, I give up. I have no clue where the issue really is. It just crashed out totally without save file (for the last few days I've been running without save file because it improves stability, though that doesn't seem to be enough to stop whatever's happening. So for now...

So, I'm back to thinking it's not about the extra sfs files. I had the crash 3 more times with just a lupusave.2fs and no sfs files loaded (except of course the base lupu528.sfs). I'm getting a little stressed trying to chase this down. Going to take a few days break from it, I'll check back in a fe...

SFS!
OK, update: 1) I'm certain it's NOT about flooding the pupsave. I checked after a crash, and the pupsave was still mostly empty. 2) It's NOT that simply having a pupsave is the problem as described in the previous post. I've been watching flash video for 6+ hours without issue, and I have a pupsave....

A tale of two boots: 1) a) Boot clean LuPu528 b) Install weechat c) Install a browser (Iron/Chromium/FireFox/Opera) d) Install flash e) Watch flash video (YouTube) and play flash games for hours without issue.... 2) a) Boot clean LuPu528 b) Install weechat c) Install a browser (Iron/Chromium/Firefox...

OK, Completed 2 different forms of RAM testing (including 3 full MemTest86+ passes), all tests passed. So, bad RAM is unlikely.
Now, with more than 6 hours uninterrupted flash video from a pfix=ram boot, I'm really leaning towards a bad sfs file. Going to do some more testing on that next.

OK, this is getting more interesting: I've been watching flash video in Iron for the whole night, no crashes. The only thing I can think of that's different: I'm running without save file at all. Fresh boot, pfix=ram. Install Iron, Flash, Weechat. Watch YouTube all night, no crash. So apparently the...

For me it's any flash video. Mainly YouTube, but it also seems to happen with other flash based video sites. It doesn't seem to be related to a specific video. I just use lupu528 as I normally would, from a fresh savefile-less boot, install a browser, flash, weechat, then head to youtube and start w...

Lucid Puppy 5.28 X/ALSA/FLASH crash
EDIT 2/26/12 -- SOLVED This has been solved in my case, details in last post in thread. So, I've been working on migrating to 5.28, but I've run across an issue. If I'm watching flash video for very long, X crashes. In 5.25, after an X crash, a simple xwin restarts it. But it refuses to restart wit...

So far so good for me...
So far, it seems to work quite well. Yeah, install from ubuntu repos isn't perfect yet. Maybe it won't ever be. That's a really tall order. But as long as the installed program doesn't have hundreds of unmet dependancies, it seems to work pretty well to install from the repos. So far, I'd have to sa...

gnumeric
OK! I'm on it! I actually already messed with updating gnumeric once, and found that it's dependencies were complex enough that I dropped it. But, I think I can have a new static pet within a few days. It may take me a few more to get it stripped down to puppy standards.
