I can't speak for whats on some of the newer pups, but on the long-term supported Price, here's the wishlist of an end user... * Replace Seamonkey as the default browser with either Firedog or Chromium. I understand the desire to keep the Seamonkey suite as it offers a lot of applications in a compa...

As an end user with no real in depth knowledge of Linux OSes, I'd love a simple way to update the video drivers for my system. X can handle the colour depth and screen res just fine, but I get issues with Google Earth (no support for filled, translucent vectors in KMZs and the like). I could probabl...

Epson Perfection V550 scanner drivers
Hoping someone more knowledgeable than me with an interest in this might be able to make a Pup out of the Epson supplied drivers. Scanning on Linux in general does seem to be one area where we are still playing catch up with the Windows crowd. Drivers for Epson Perfection V550 photo scanner (32 and ...

Changing read/write permissions for files
I'm having trouble making a file read/execute only. I am using the IBM Fan Control PET ( discussed here ) and have modified the file ibm_acpi_fan which is in root/startup, as described by Simes in that thread in order to make the program work. When I modify the file, save and reboot, the program wor...

Back to the original question, I've tried Ubuntu in the past and found it heavy and OTT for my requirements. I chose Puppy because Windows updates were just getting too much, and I wanted an OS that was very light weight and simply served to make the computer operate and to provide the bare bones ne...

Finding and uninstalling orphan dependencies
So I've finally settled on the applications I need, but have tried and ditched a few, which I suspect has left me with a lot of orphan dependencies (thanks, Firefox and LibreOffice!).
Is there any way I can find and remove them in Precise Puppy 5.7.1?

Puppy power! Finally ditched Windows
Well, I finally ditched Windows completely today As of now, my main system solely runs on puppy power! (Precise Puppy 5.7.1). Between managing to get most programs working natively under Puppy, and a few hold-outs under Wine - XP is no longer needed at all.

Good Puppy! :D Installed the Java pet from Lobster's link, then used 666philb's run command, and off it went. Installed and ran perfectly first time. Just a note for others: I'm using the Linux specific version from Jsesh website, version 5.7 (Jsesh-install-5.7.jar). Thanks for your help, I'm sure I...

First, open a terminal and ensure Java is up an running, type: #java You should see some stuff indicating that Java is ok. Then go to the folder where Jsesh-install-5.7.jar is and type: #java -jar Jsesh-install-5.7.jar and see if returns some kind of error. Post it here, so perhaps we can help you ...
