kernel switching made super simple

#1 Post by jrb »

You have a frugal or usb Puppy install. You want to try a different kernel (zdrv) to see if it will work better, (sound, shutdown, whatever).

Here are two scripts which when placed in the same directory as your current zdrv and vmlinuz will allow you to drag a new zdrv to the zdrv_cp script, reboot and that's it. Your running a new kernel.

Disappointed in the new kernel? Click the zdrv_rst script and you're back to the original.

Here's a demo shot showing before, 0_puptest3-bkup, and after, 0_puptest3. The new zdrv and vmlinuz have been copied from a mounted (just click on it and say yes) ISO of bionic32

BTW, If you switch into a 3rd kernel without restoring the original, don't worry, the originals will still be kept as the .old files.

Note1: The new zdrv and vmlinuz MUST be in the same location!
Note2: Download the attachment, click on it and Xarchive will allow you to extract the two scripts.
