Is it possible to Put Laptop into Standby and Resume?

#1 Post by Mordor »

Has anyone found a way to make Puppy 2.14 work with Suspend to RAM? I have a Acer 1355 Aspire Laptop with VIA Integrated Video Card.

I tried the scripts on the forum and the laptop goes into standby. After pressing a key, it wakes up but the screen is blank. The network is on, the X is running ( I pressed Up and enter and it went back to sleep) but the screen is black.

Any ideas? I've found a tool called powersave on https://sourceforge.net/projects/powersave (choose powersave 0.14 stable). Maybe someone could compile it into a dotpup and see if it's working?

Thanks

I found a solution to part of the problem. I'm posting the steps here as it might be useful to some:

1. Download http://software.opensuse.org/download/h ... 3.i586.rpm and rename the file to suspend.rpm. The file is RPM package for suspend.sf.net project.

2. Download and install unrpm http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... ach&id=272

3. run rxvt cd to /tmp and mkdir s2ram.

4. Copy the downloaded suspend.rpm to s2ram directory. Then run unrpm s2ram. After it's done go to /tmp/s2ram/usr/sbin and run s2ram. This should suspend and resume the machine properly.

It should work. If it doesn't try the options on the opensuse site :
http://en.opensuse.org/S2ram

So the only remaining part is to automate this process. Does anyone know how to make Puppy run a script when closing laptop's lid?

Hi Mordor, I started a similar thread to this requesting that an improved suspend script be included in puppy 2.15CE. See here.:

Perhaps you would add some comments to this thread. I really is irritating when your laptop hangs because you close the lid, for whatever reason.
Cheers, mike.

Not sure which one but one of my laptops goes into suspend & wakes up. I'll make a note when it comes up next.

I just closed the lid on this one, a Gateway m-520. Screen goes off & lights up when opened.
I know one laptop goes into suspend, when laptop is left & lid is kept up; screen comes back on but don't remember if with the mouse or hitting a key.

Works this way (both situations) without having done anything, in terms of setup. Wondered if there are some controls somewhere?

Turns out it's this laptop that when left, screen goes off & movement of the mouse brings it back up. Also no probs with opening & closing the lid. All works, no hangs.

I don't think standby and resume should be included by 2.15 by default. It will most likely be too difficult to get it to work across enough computers.

However, we should try and do something to simplify the process. Probably a dotpup along with easy to follow instructions or a wizard.

Mordor,

Did You get this to work?

After following your instructions and;
After it's done go to /tmp/s2ram/usr/sbin and run s2ram. This should suspend and resume the machine properly.
...all I get is :

"sh: s2ram: command not found"

Thanks Boston,

...and then I get;
sh-3.00# /tmp/s2ram/usr/sbin/s2ram
/tmp/s2ram/usr/sbin/s2ram: error while loading shared libraries: libx86.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
sh-3.00
...which means...??? :?

The s2ram file is there I can click on it...the permission is set to executable

Hi again,

Moved the downloaded libx86 file to the /lib/ directory and I guess I am now one step further - now I get;
sh-3.00# /root/s2ram/usr/sbin/s2ram
Machine is unknown.
This machine can be identified by:
sys_vendor = "Dell Computer Corporation"
sys_product = "Latitude CPx H500GT "
sys_version = ""
bios_version = "A13"
See http://en.opensuse.org/S2ram for details.

If you report a problem, please include the complete output above.
Still no Suspend though.

(I have moved the s2ram package to my homedirectory as it disappears at reboot otherwise...)

Hi again,

with "/root/s2ram/usr/sbin/s2ram2" and the -f option the laptop goes into suspend - but does not wake up again - hangs in a state where there is nothing on the screen - does not detect caps lock or anything else - brutal power off is the only way to get out of this ComaSuspend...
