Firefox 32bit Extended Support Release - discontinued
UPDATE 01 May 2020:
I have decided to in future, only do MAJOR POINT releases (i.e. 68.6.0 , 68.7.0 etc)
as MINOR POINT releases (i.e. 68.6.1 , 68.6.2 etc) can be done by
simply accepting Firefox's offer of update, when that is made.

Re: Firefox 32bit ESR
It downloaded OK but the site threw a 503 error and some other messages along the way.ozsouth wrote:Firefox ESR 32bit Version 68.5.0 - tested OK in bionicpup32-8.0 (ScPup 32bit needs gtk3 also). Use at own risk.

I will test it later.
Doesn't the ESR version of firefox also support an older plugin model that the newer Firefox quantum no longer supports?ozsouth wrote:@Flash - Firefox Extended Support Release is the 'fewer frills' more stable version aimed at large companies. I find it has most useful features of standard firefox with fewer issues.

That was briefly true, but not anymore I think. Since September 2018, the ESR version has been based on Firefox 60.2 or later, and all Firefoxes since 57 (the first Quantum) use the new WebExtensions API.s243a wrote:Doesn't the ESR version of firefox also support an older plugin model that the newer Firefox quantum no longer supports?
Are you sure? I downloaded via the ppm, firefox-72.0.1 for arch32pup (which I think is the ESR version even though it doesn't say so). It comes with this lib:6502coder wrote:That was briefly true, but not anymore I think. Code: Select all
/usr/lib/firefox/libxul.so
Here's what wikipedia says about xulrunner:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XULRunnerSoftware architecture
XULRunner is a runtime that can be used to bootstrap multiple XUL + XPCOM applications that are equal in capabilities to Firefox and Thunderbird.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XPCOMThe most prominent usage of XPCOM is within the Firefox web browser. Many of its internal components interact via XPCOM interfaces. Furthermore, Firefox used to allow add-ons extensive XPCOM access, but this was removed in Firefox 57 and replaced with the less-permissive WebExtensions API.[2][3] (Three forks of Firefox still support the legacy add-on capability: Pale Moon,[4] Basilisk,[5] Waterfox.[6])

No, I'm not sure--that's why I hedged and said "I think"
I do know that several months ago I tried running the then-current Firefox ESR but gave it up because it wouldn't take my favorite legacy plug-ins. This being the expected result, I didn't look into the issue in any depth.
These days I don't run any kind of Firefox on Puppy any more because it's just too heavy for my old hardware. I run PaleMoon instead. On my newer computers I do run Firefox as my preferred browser.

I'm actually finding that firefox is running surprisingly fast on arch32pup. My guess is that the speed performance has to do with how firefox handles ssl certificates on arch32pup. Arch, uses an "NSS database" for the ssl certificates on firefox and chromium rather than normal text files located in directory folders. If this database is used often is might typically stay in memory (via caching) and consequently reduce the amount of IO usage.6502coder wrote:No, I'm not sure--that's why I hedged and said "I think"

This is just a wild ass guess though. Regarding the plugin you tried; do you know if it was XPCOM type plugin? Firefox once had an even older plugin type (once upon a time) called NPAPI.
