TEENpup and future TEENpup's (Expected Releases)

#1 Post by john biles »

Hello Everyone,
In reply to Gekko's comments else where on this forum in relation to the quick releasing of new versions of Puppy, I want to add this about TEENpup.

TEENpup main objective is to create a usable operating system hopefully Teenager's and those young at heart could use every day.
It is meant to be a bright and colourful version of Puppy with Added Packages that would appeal to a young user.

Apps for Chat, Internet, Burner CD's, watching DVD's, MP3, Cameras, Printing photo's etc etc. Basically stuff a Teenager would do on a Home PC.

I see TEENpup as a single computer in a average home being used by the teenagers in the house as well as some use by the parents paying for the internet connection. I don't see it as a office PC connected to a large server.

With each new release of TEENpup I want it to hopefully be better than the last version. With this in mind I don't plan to release a new version of TEENpup ever 3 or 4 months. It may happen that way or might take longer.

I am always searching for new Apps that may find their way into the next version of TEENpup.

Were possible I will try and use the lastest version of Puppy as a base for TEENpup.

My goal for TEENpup is to make a usable operating system to allow the average User to stop using Windows all together.

While it might not be possible fully with the next version of TEENpup that is the goal I'm aiming for.

Lastly like Barry K, Pizzasgood etc and their versions of Puppy, you can make suggestions on what you would like to see go into TEENpup, but in the end I have to make the finally decision.
Legacy OS 2017 has been released.

Hi John, the new puppy kernel would enhance TEENpup. I now have a working internal card reader, for my SD cards anyway. ( I think sony mem sticks are out for the moment). It would be nice to have functioning firewire and working suspend, laptop lid switch etc. too.
You did a brilliant job getting all the apps into teenpup, but if there is another one that I would like to see there, it would be Amarok.
Cheers, Mike

Hello msumner,
I have been trying to get amarok working for weeks now and while I have it up and running and recognizing that there is a CD in the drive and listing all the tracks, It just won't play them.
If you wondering I do have an "engine" installed for the sound.

I need to keep experimenting until I can get it working.

Hoprfully it will be in the next version of TEENpup.

Hello Everyone,
With the problems experienced on the forum with remastering iso's in Puppy 2.17 and some Apps I want to add to the Next TEENpup which don't work with Puppy 2.17's kernel. I have decided to release a Update / Bug fix to TEENpup2.0.0

While this Update will still be based on Puppy 2.14 hopefully it will be seen as more then just an update. (Iso will be slightly bigger than the current version)

All Going Well TEENpup3.0.0 will be based on Puppy 2.18 or newer.

Hopefully this update will be coming in the next 2 weeks or so.

Are there other download sites other than pkagfiles.net?

I have tried 5 times and the download always comes through with an
incorrect MD5sum - and the download is painfully slow.

Here is the result of my latest effort, downloaded overnight:

Code: Select all

# md5sum TEENpup2.0.0.iso
6eafd35bda6cbccf22bd22eac3bcc9c5 TEENpup2.0.0.iso
# cat TEENpup2.0.0.iso-checksum.txt
64574409edc1918709847f7f1f4fe6ed TEENpup2.0.0.iso#
Sure would like to get this up and running for our 10 & 12yr olds!

@edoc

Is the downloaded file close to expected filesize?
Have you tried using wget/xwget to ensure the download isn't broken?
I just verified the file on the server & downloaded using opera & md5 checked OK.

Servage has been a bit strange on downloads recently, random lost connections/restarts etc...

Silly me, trusting that "download completed" meant that the download had
been *successfully* completed - the downloaded file is a little short of full
size. Sigh.

I have noticed downloads terminating too quickly and that was obvious but
this one ran for a long time.

Hello edoc,
Sorry to hear your having trouble downloaded TEENpup2.0.0
I had a look at www.puppyisos.org and if I click on the iso with Firefox it starts downloading as expected.
If I try to download the iso with Prozilla downloader (included in TEENpup2.0.0) which has resume support, I get the same message as you get?

Sometimes in the past I used Windows to download some iso's. Maybe if you still have no luck give that a try.

I was getting a short-cycle partial download from the other site so I ran the
download at http://www.pkagfiles.net/.isos-v0f/ while at church and here
is the result:

# md5sum TEENpup2.0.0.iso
8842c5be0b3e4f5aee20ac4a1f7101e2 TEENpup2.0.0.iso
# cat TEENpup2.0.0.iso-checksum.txt
64574409edc1918709847f7f1f4fe6ed TEENpup2.0.0.iso#

File size of TEENpup2.0.0.iso 30-May-2007 20:41 273M
My downloaded file size reports as 273M as well.

Not sure how to proceed, unless the md5 checksum posted at pkagfiles.net
could be incorrect and I might have a good download?

Also, given the imminent posting of a new TEENpup should I just wait for
it rather than taking all of this time to download this version?

I don't think puppyisos.org allows wget. pkagfiles currently does.

So when I get a different result it tells me that I picked up some noise along
the way?

EDIT: A buddy grabbed the iso in WinXP and burned me a CD. I like the
TEENpup setup and it works well. I think I will dump my dysfunctional 2.16
install to the external HDD and dual boot TEENpup and TMMXINE instead.
Sure appreciate the creative efforts!

BTW: Am now working on dual-booting TEENpup and TMXXINE-Prism. Having some
interesting results toying with my GRUB code (see following) - TMXXINE-Prism does
not want to boot Frugal yet.

Anything obvious in my GRUB code?

Code: Select all

# Linux bootable partition config begins
title TEENpup 2.0.0 Puppy Linux (Full on /dev/hda1)
  root (hd0,0)
  kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 ro vga=normal

title TMXXINE-Prism Puppy Linux (frugal on /dev/hda1)
  rootnoverify (hd0,0)
  kernel (hd0,0)/boot/prism/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=idehd
  PDEV1=hda1 PHOME=hda1 psubdir=boot/prism loglevel=3 vga=normal
  initrd (hd0,0)/boot/prism/initrd.gz
# Linux bootable partition config ends
In any case there is a cheap thrill running TEENpup when I am 52 ... guess the old
saw about men always thinking that they are still 19 rings true?

What is the cleanest way to uninstall apps from TEENpup, please?

I'd like to reduce clutter by deleting games that I do not play.

For example: kmahjongg

I looked around the menus and found no menu entry for uninstalling apps.

Thanks!

teenpup 2 download

#14 Post by tjk176 »

I've been trying for about a week now to find a iso of teenpup 2.0.0 that works. I'm really interested in trying it but when i dl from here http://www.pkagfiles.net/.isos-v0f/ it is "done" very prematurely. (last try out of 4 was 18.9 MB) You should think about making a Bittorrent for this. Can anyone point me to a good dl?

Sadly enough I had to ask a friend to download and burn my TEENpup ISO CD using
WinXP.

Same was true for my ISO CD of TMXXINE-Prism. I don't know if it is because my
Verizon DSL is running too slowly and allowing noise or what. I have observed some
odd things with Verizon flagging Yahoo E-mails as spam and download speeds varying
widely.

We have our home and 10 acres for sale here in FL and plan to relocate to GA - some
time soon we will drop Verizon and just access the Internet using our Alltel cellphones
as high speed modems - tests suggest that upload and download speeds will be as
good or better than Verizon DSL - perhaps because we are in a rural location.

Great news! It is a neat version of Puppy - I am testing it prior to setting it up for the
children. Need to know if I can support it first.

Just noticed that my DSL modem connect light was unsteady - went out and hosed down
the lightning surge protector contacts in the incoming phone line circuit with some
conductor cleaner and protectant - the modem Ready light is steady now - could have
merely been a local physical connection intermittent that was messing with my ISO
download efforts!

I am looking forward to the new version of TEENpup as I am starting to see some of
the 2.14 quirks which motivated me to upgrade to 2.16 and 2.17 when they were
released.

;-)

Hello edoc,
TEENpup was built using some dotpups, pets and a good percentage used files added piece by piece.
This was the case with KDE based Apps like kmahjongg.

While the KDE base on which kmahjongg runs is large, once that base is there, KDE based Apps like kmahjongg don't add as much to an iso as might be expected.

OK to remove "kmahjongg" for example you need to go to /opt/kde/bin and delete "kmahjongg".
Then you need to go to /opt/kde/usr/share/applications and delete the "kmahjongg" desktop file there. this will remove "kmahjongg" from the menu after going to /usr/sbin and opening a terminal and typing ./fixmenus
You also need to check /opt/kde/usr/share and see if there's a folder called "kmahjongg" and delete that as well.
All thats left to do is delete the icon in /opt/kde/usr/share/icons and you should be done.

The same applies for other Apps. Also use Pfind etc to search for other files relating to a App you want to remove.

If the above isn't 100% correct, it is because I am answering on a Windows PC at work and going by memory.
Legacy OS 2017 has been released.

This is just a suggestion but if TeenPup 3.00 is based on 2.18 then calling it Teen Pupp 2.18 might be simpler? Warren first started doing this with Ezpup - I think it is a better numbering system

I used to have problems downloading ISO's especially bigger ones. I found Opera was better at downloading but not perfect.

Then I start using wget (specifically xwget from the menu in Puppy) because this checksums as it downloads - no problems since.

It is important to remember what Teenpup and Tmxxine Prism are:

Basically Puppy + an arrangement of software.
Grafpup is a fork - a new type of Puppy.

 wandering off topic again . . .
