        }
needed changed to

Code: Select all

} else {
         set pupfile [exec /bin/losetup-FULL /dev/loop1 | grep "/msy_save" | cut -f 2 -d "(" | cut -f 1 -d ")" | cut -f 4 -d "/" ]

Hi

Just downloaded Minisys Muppy008 run fine from livecd, can access internet. But on full HD install can't connect to internet. Netwotk wizard can't see my network card (VIA Rhine), tried to install it manually without any success, Has anyone had this problem before. I have install Muppy008 at least four times same problem.

NCI works fine with any version of Puppy and Muppy 007 HD install, but not Minisys Muppy008.

Cheers

Getting wireless to work on puppy 3.01 and Muppy080

#63 Post by Barburo »

I have found that the wizard usually works OK to get a wireless connection.
It will save the configuration and try to connect the next time (says ...backgrounded as message during boot up) but you often need to re-run the wizard again. I find that the script wireless-gtkdialog (search for it on this forum) works well.

If things get stubborn I run this script (change the parameters specific to you (like eth1 and your access point (ap)) in a terminal window. Sometimes I need to run it a couple of times. My wireless is WEP - this wont work for anything else. the multiple iwconfig lines work better than a single iwconfig command.

Delete the rmmodr and modprobe lines if your card doesn't use bcm43xx.

#!/bin/sh
rmmod bcm43xx
sleep 3
modprobe bcm43xx
sleep 3
ifconfig eth1 down
ifconfig eth1 up
iwconfig eth1 essid xxxx
iwconfig eth1 key open 1234123412
iwconfig eth1 channel 11
iwconfig eth1 nickname default
iwconfig eth1 mode managed
iwconfig eth1 ap your-access-point-in-hex
iwconfig eth1 bit auto
iwconfig eth1 rate auto
iwconfig eth1 txpower auto
sleep 3
iwconfig eth1
echo "... Trying DHCP for eth1"
rm -f /etc/dhcpc/*.pid
# dhcpcd -t 30 -h puppypc -d eth1
dhcpcd -t 30 eth1
IP=`ifconfig eth1 | grep 'inet addr:' | sed 's/^[ ^t]*//' | sed 's/inet addr://g' | cut -f 1 -d ' '`
echo "IP Address:" $IP

K3B

Hi Willhunt
Can you just briefly mention which .sfs file you're using to make K3B work and any other relevant settings.
Thanks, Barburo

I used the mkkde and the build-a-muppy script but there are
several methods for making your own kde.sfs and now is a
kde 3.5.7 sfs also.

Once mkkde made the kde.sfs file and the kde355.pup file.

I mounted the sfs file and just copied the files from the sfs into
the build-a-muppy(sounds like a Dimension X episode) dir
/build-a-muppy/sfs-sources/original-to-addon/
I also used the updated initrd.gz

I put the KDE-3.5.5.pup that mkkde created in the
/build-a-muppy/sfs-sources/original-to-addon/root/dotpups-downloads/
and recreated the cd

then I booted the cd ran the kde.pup rebooted
ran fixmenus if you want the desktop
exit to prompt and run xwin startkde2
everything is working great

seems a bit convoluted but I hope it helps

I have yet to get the bcm43xx driver to work on any of my puppies
I'm still using ndiswrapper :(

Default Browser

#66 Post by nic2109 »

Firstly: I just love muppy008 - it's so good. :D

One teeny-weeny problemette however: http://etc.etc links in emails have no effect.

How can a default browser be set so that they spring to life as they should?

First: Muppy is really great! I fell in love all over again.

Next: A few details.

Downloaded 008, burnt to CD, booted, made Muppy flash boot. Then I copied a dev_save 3fs file to the stick from a Puppy 2.0.1 I have been using for about a year and a half. Most, almost all, of my installed pups came across ok, but not all, and one I really depended on was gxine. I used it to play CDs and MP3s. The old gxine icon on my old desktop now calls MuppyMplayer. When I click it Mplayer comes up saying No Media Opened. How can I make this work?

The analog clock did not come through the upgrade intact; I can find no trace of it. I booted the CD again hoping to find info on its name and/or how to get it but I could not find a thing. How can I get that clock -- it's so cool.

Booting from the CD I never could get connected to my router on eth0, but with the old save file normal setup worked fine. I mention this because it may relate to the next item.

I need the devx_080.sfs in there badly. In the description it was noted there is a particular save file. Will that mess with my save 2fs and the things that work ok as of now?

The inclusion of WINE is what caused me to investigate this Muppy dist. It's the only one I have ever seen that gets it in. THANKS!

I think you mean pup_save.3fs muppy 08 solves the problem of
overwriting or unplaned upgrade by renaming the pup_save.2fs
to msy_save.2fs :) if edit you /usr/loacl/bin/Muppymplayer
script by uncommenting the line exec gxine and add the line exit
right after that one and gxine is installed your gxine should work :)

The clock should be in usr/local/GtkBasic-Analogclock
if not Here is the DotPup

if you need ndiswrapper it requires the dev_008.sfs

hope this helps

willhunt, thank you!

Analog clock: found and is working.

gxine: now working.

msy_save.2fs & dev_008.sfs: I used too much shorthand in that first sentence. To the flash boot mem stick I copied pup_save.3fs (pup ver 201) AS msy_save.2fs. That file has a size of 487M and does not leave room for dev_008.sfs on the 1GB flash drive. I have ordered another flash drive, 2GB anticipating being able to fit dev_008.sfs on it.

So should I have done it differently? The copying of pup_save.3fs to the stick? Should I have started from scratch and rebuilt my installed system?

Again, thanks! I am happy happy with Muppy!

Is there important stuff missing from Muppy?

#71 Post by aboodoo »

@ Willhunt,

Did you mean there is no ndiswrapper in the normal install?

This is only my second foray into the world of Linux, trying to get some old machines up & running (Muppy succeeded where Xubuntu failed), and I am a bit confused...

Everything I've read says my old wireless adaptor (D-Link DWL-122) should work with no problem (it's a prism2_usb type), but other suggestions mentioned ndiswrapper, though it keeps telling me the .inf files from the Windows driver (latest) are invalid.

I can't get anything to work as the adaptor is an "unknown device" in the USB probe (though it works fine on Mac OS X 10.4.11 (iMac G4) and Windows XP Pro SP2 (Dell Latitude)). Reinstalled it on Win this morning in the hope of re-flashing the firmware, but still no joy...

Also modprobe does not seem to work/exist, so all the instructions I have for getting it to work on Muppy fail... I'm stuck!

My system:
HP Vectra VL5 - Pentium MMX 166, 192Mb RAM, 2Gb HD
Muppy 008 / Puppy 3.01 installed on HD
D-Link DWL-122 (b type, NOT G122), wanting to connect using WEP 128 bit

Thanks

just run sylpheed and open the configuration>Common Preferences>Details>External commands

yes you should rebuild :( to make your system
stable

Me I clean and squash my old pup_save's then I can mount them at will:)

Ooh no mr. bill! A death worse than fate. Okay then, and I still am not sure how to handle the network setup wizard not working straight off the CD. From your comment to aboodoo I got confused. And if I still need devx_008.sfs how would I get it on the boot CD? Would I boot the CD just to make a boot flash drive and then copy it to the stick?

What do you mean when you say you clean your old pup_saves? And, when you mount them do you get their functionality back?

Thanks Will. So everything should have been working... My wireless thingy is supported via ndiswrapper or prism2_usb in other Linuxes (Mandrake, Ubuntu, etc.) according to what I read on the 'net, but somehow Muppy/Puppy doesn't seem to like it. It's not in Puppy Extras, presumably because prism2_usb is meant to do the job, and has been for most other people with DWL-122s on other Linuxes.

So anyway... I am supposed to plug this thing in, then type

Code: Select all

modprobe prism2_usb
to which the console replies

Code: Select all

FATAL: module prism2_usb not found.
Puppy Network Wizard says it's there, but loading it fails. I know it's a Prism 2 card from selling and supporting the DWL-122 (and the G122) for Mac users - my unit works on our iMac G4 (OS X 10.4) and Dell Pentium 2 laptop (Win XP Pro), and flash drives work on this Puppy box, so I must be doing something wrong, but what?

@Drewmeister
What do you mean when you say you clean your old pup_saves?
while booted on the new pup save file I run these command against
the Old pup save file

Code: Select all

e2fsck -p /mnt/home/Old_pup_save.2fs
mount -o loop /mnt/home/Old_pup_save.2fs /mnt/data
then I open gtkfind and remove all the
.wh. files
then you just squash the old pupsave file with

Code: Select all

mksquashfs /mnt/data /mnt/home/old_pup_save.sfs
And if I still need devx_008.sfs how would I get it on the boot CD?
I use the program ISOMaster from the multimedia menu and add the devx_080.sfs
and save the new iso and the burn it works great
And, when you mount them do you get their functionality back?
sometimes it allows me to copy thing out of the /usr directory into the
new /usr directory sometimes they work sometimes they don't I just don't
have the skill to know until I try it :(

@Aboodoo
yes ndiswrapper should work "out of the box"
I borrowed a linksys dongel and on my machine here is what I found out. If I boot with the dongle already in the machine then
it worked just fine but inserting after the boot gave me no joy :(
I really wish I could be more help but wireless confuses me also
have you tried the script by Barburo posted earlier in this thread?
the author of the puppy extras is the goto man on this subject
other than that it may have to wait till the Master of Mayhem Mu himself returns from vacation Again I wish I could be more help :(
on the other hand are loading zmsy_080.sfs? if you are then you
should you see the file /pinstall.linux_wlan_ng-0.2.8.sh if not your zmsy_080.sfs file is not loading for some reason?

remaster

#78 Post by tlchost »

I burned a LiveCD of the final version....boots up works fine.

But, when I attempted tp create an iso through the remaster program I notice that mys_080.sfs is not found (instead I see pup_080.sys) and there is no zmsy_080.sfs on the burned CD.

Any hints on what I can do to create an iso after I'm made changes and additions to the system?

Thanks

Happy new year :)

Ok, I'm back online.
First:
thanks for the detailed feedback.
I will try to help where I can in the next 2 days with quick issues, and have a closer look in the next days on more complicated problems.

Second: special thanks to WillHunt for his engagement in helping so much :)

About the current status:
while I was offline, I fixed bugs in GtkBasic.
It was not possible to destroy objects, what could result in crashes in more complex programs.
As GtkBasic will be used to write new utilities for Muppy, this was important.
I still need to add some smaller changes, but the most is done, so I will upload the fixed GtkBasic this weekend.
I also wrote a kind of "plugin" system for widgets like the Analog-Clock.
Now a widget will no longer start its own GtkBasic, but all widgets use one single instance. This reduces memory-usage. The Widgets are intended to make the desktop more "intuitive". For example they will replace the memory-consuming tray-buttons I released a while ago.
I will upload the new code in some days.

Beside that, now I got feedback from companies that intend to use Muppy.
The most important issue is localization.
The highest priority now will be to translate Puppys Wizards to german.
This means: please do not expect new programs soon, the next weeks will be full of work in fixing the reported bugs and rewriting existing programs for easier localization.

Thanks everyone for reporting their experiences.
Mark
