no sound with 4.30 on dell studio 1555

#1 Post by laptopnewbee »

first some hardware data:
this laptop was delivered less than 2 weeks before posting date.

intel dual core 2ghz cpu.
3gb ram
250gb hdd
broadcom tg3 ethernet card
internal wifi card (unknown to me, and not configured)
logitech optical mouse on usb 2.0
tsstcorpdvd_ts-t663a optical disk drive

all all seems to work except the soundcard below.

sound card is ether intel high definition audio HDMI (windows vista says this), or it is a creative labs x-fi mb (the bundled software is for this card). dell website says that ether card may be installed..

not dell, intel or creative (in the case of their hardware) seem to offer linux drivers

puppy 4.30 doesnt\'t seem to have any drivers for those cards, and after much searching i have not been able to find anything saying that there are any linux drivers for ether card. does anyone know a workaround for this? maybe there is some sort of windows emulator for soundcard drivers?

I have just used google and there are linux drivers available for your sound card. You might like to try some first. :)

new info

did dogpile search, and found out that the x-fi mb is a software emulated x-fi on (in this case) the intel hdmi hardware.

more searching found that alsa 1.0.18 or maybe newer supports that intel hardware.

so i tried installing all the alsa .pets for version 1.0.20.

the alsa wiz still doesn't make my sound card work.

conclusion: i don't know enough (yet) to fix my problem.

next i will look into finding a compiling tutorial, and one for making ,pets too

Hmmm .....

I thought I've read about this somewhere .... and sure enough, google gave me a quick hit right about here ...

1. Edit /etc/modprobe.conf

2. Find this line:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel

3. Add this below it:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6

i'm now guessing that i need to learn how to compile so i can get the latest drivers package on my machine.

Try running AlsaMixer audio mixer from the multimedia pull down and see what chip puppy thinks your sound card has.

thanks again, but i already tried that.

from all i can tell i really need a newer alsa drivers package, and it looks like i will need to compile it myself.

i'm taking a short break from my housekeeping so i will have to hunt up a how-to on compiling later when i can just sit here and surf the net.

Did you try installing lame?

#10 Post by whatshisname »

Just did a new 4.3.1 install of Puppy on an ancient Dell Inspiron 2600. No sound in Flash. No sound playing mp3 radio streams. No sound playing mp3's.

Mucked around with alsa mixer per suggestions in the forum.

Installed lame, mplayer and the mplayer codecs.

Now I have sound all the way around.

Hope this helps someone.
