Where does devx_421.sfs go in a frugal install?

#1 Post by garyp »

I've frugally installed a multiuser puppy 4.12 on my ext2 harddrive. Now I want to compile. I see lots of instructions on the web, but they conflict with each other. (I can't figure out where the *definitive* advice is.)

for example, concerning the placement of devx_421.sfs, look at this one:
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/compiling

In the Appendix we find
"save or copy the file to /mnt/home "

but a few paragraphs down on the very same page we find
"Copy the downloaded file to the same place where your pupxxx.sfs file is located" which is /mnt/home/puppy421

I've seen both instructions in various places around the web.

The latter does not work, but the former does. I'm confused. Can someone clarify this for me?

And where is the best place to look for definitive advice?

Bow wow,
Gary

/mnt/home works

Click help icon, click on 'HOWTO write programs for Puppy',scroll down
to paragraph 'C/C++ programming'

Thank you. Yes, /mnt/home works. But it's also the root of my Ubuntu installation's filesystem. It's a bit odd to keep a file relating to puppy in / of Ubuntu. It would be a little neater if I could keep all my files (e.g. devx_421.sfs) in /mnt/home/puppy421. Is that possible?

Do you think Ubuntu would object? Or perhaps get confused with the file of the same name that he might one day put there?

Where are your puppy files? (f.e. the pup_412.sfs)
Or post the menu.lst here
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).
Consult Wikka
Use peppyy's puppysearch

No, I can't imagine there ever being a problem. It's just an organizational thing ... having files in separate places. Not a big deal.

puppy files are in /puppy421 (Ubuntu) which is the same as /mnt/home/puppy421 (Puppy). Devx seems to really want to be in / (Ubuntu) = /mnt/home (Puppy). I'll post menu.lst if you want, but I won't be near that machine for a while.

thanks,

Put the devx in /puppy421 then.
And use the subdir= parm at the kernel line.
