Software request: Latest full inkscape

#1 Post by nibl »

Is there a current (0.47+) build of the full Inkscape anywhere, that will run on the 4.2 series (or 4.3)?

I have the full 0.46 version for Puppy but it has some odd bug and crashes when using text. The old Lite versions (which are ancient at 0.36) don't have all the features I need described in various tutorials.

While apps like Blender, Ardour and LMMS are special-interest apps, I'm pleased there are specialised puplets including them. However Gimp and Inkscape have mass appeal, not only on the Linux desktop.

It would be nice to have the latest Inkscape and Gimp available in full versions with script/plug-in support and tutorials, maybe every 6 months?

Thanks.

Thanks Sigmund, what's the secret to searching precisely in phpbb? If you enter "inkscape 0.47" then it turns up somewhere far down and gives 182 matches. In fact it only hits on "inkscape" the version is not found.

In this case it is on the first page, but that's luck. Mostly I can go through pages of results and sift through posts and still not find what I was looking for. Obviously I'm doing something wrong...or did you use Google? I imagine that might be better?

That is one of the mysteries of the century.

In this case, if I understand things correctly, phpBB considers "0.47" to be two words, "0" and "47". And guess what? Although the instructions neglect to tell you this, the search ignores words of less than three characters in length.

I have a couple of suggestions:

1. By default "Display results as: Topics" is selected at the bottom of the search form. This is generally best for getting you to an appropriate topic. But when your search term is in a post way down at the end of a six page topic, you can do a lot of hunting before you find it. In that case it is better to try "Display results as: Posts" and "Return first All available characters of posts." Then each of the posts in the results should contain your search term, and you can use your browser's Find function to easily search the results. This way you won't have to wade through all posts in an entire thread hunting for the one post that contains your search term.

2. You can narrow-down the number of hits by choosing an appropriate forum on the search form. For instance, if you are looking for a .pet to install, try "Search in forum: Additional Software (PETs, n' stuff)".

The phpBB search has its good points. As just mentioned, it lets you search a specific forum. And it is capable of finding the latest posts, while an external search engine may be days or weeks behind. But when I don't need phpBB's search features, I usually go to an external search engine and use site:www.murga-linux.com/puppy/ as my first search term.

Happy hunting!

Yes, indeed. The following term in Google: "inkscape 0.47 site:www.murga-linux.com/puppy/" shows the thread I was looking for as the first hit -- as one would expect.

Many Thanks for the tips, I will try those out next time. In fact I was considering installing phpBB as a forum on my own website. Only the search function annoys and baffles me so much that it has kept me from doing so.

Hi

@ nibl
You could also try this: http://www.wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html
instead of the forum search.

You're welcome.

Note that this forum isn't running on the latest version of phpBB. Perhaps the current version has a better search function. Perhaps not. I think forum member racepres runs a newer version on his website. You might ask him how he likes it, if you are still considering installing it on yours.

phpBB search

@racepres: is the newer phpBB 3.x good otherwise, apart from the search?

I have been using PunBB because it was more puppy-like in its size and speed, but it does lack features.
