Wine
Not sure if this is the right place to ask.
I use wine for Spotify streaming music.
I have lupu234 and use the Wine that they have in the Quickpet so
maybe an older version than what you guys talks about now.
I wonder about wine and security. When I listen to Spotify makes that my computer more open then if I just surf only using linux?
1. Suppose me never install wine. Is that safer than a puppy with wine?
2. Suppose I install wine on another puppy named puppywine
and only use that one to listen to Spotify. Me rebooting into that one.
3. Suppose me surf in linux browser and wine is only in the background but not activated other than that it start if I click on a .exe file.
Can the intruder still make use of the wine to install in the background TRojan that make use of wine to keylog and such bad things?

Thanks indeed. Have read almost all of it and find it very interesting.
It support my naive suggestion that one should use two frugal install of the preferred puppy.
One without wine and one with. So one have the one without as the main puppy and then the few times when one need Wine then one reboot and boot into the wine featured puppy.
That way one are only exposed to such exploits when one are using wine and not as now all the time.
If one want to be really sure one should do as Flash and others that always use CD or DVD and don't access any HDD.
I guess they transfer important files as backup to external HDD when needed.
that seems to be the most secure behavior.
As I have now wine can be exploited all the time.
So I have to thing this through.
I should move Firefox out of pupsave so I can always use regardless of which puppy I use.
Can Sylpheed email client be moved outside pupsave too?
Sorry if I derail the Wine thread but wine security is a bit on topic but maybe should have its own thread. But I am satisfied now. I've got the answers I needed.

Yeah, I was hoping for more of a basic repository, too. Any place that hosts dev files would probably have to keep them fairly updated and/or host multiple versions, right?green_dome wrote:I have found .dev files usually by google searching for a specific application. Notice the files I used when compiling Wine are from a few different websites. I am always on the lookout for other places that host .dev files.

Whatever problem they were having appears to be resolved now.jogreer wrote:I can't download the wine 1.3.6 pet from WUALA. "This webpage is not available" when I click Download to your computer. What am I doing wrong?
If downloading from one of Wuala's webpages is not working, and waiting for them to fix the problem is unacceptable, there is the possibility that downloading from within their application will work.
You will need to "Create a new account" (free) in order to download, or upload, using the Wuala application. I know, it is another username and password to keep track of.
One way is to click "Open in Wuala". Clicking "Start" might work from within the browser if Java is installed and your browser is aware of Java's location.
Another way is to download Wuala.
<http://www.wuala.com/en/download/linux>
<http://www.wuala.com/files/wuala.tar.gz>
Short directions:
Extract the files from "wuala.tar.gz"
Open the directory containing those extracted files.
Right click > Window > Terminal here
Or hit the tilde key (next to the "1" key on US keyboards).
My Java location is "/root/jre1.6.0_20/bin/java"
In the terminal window type (without quotes):
"/root/jre1.6.0_20/bin/java -jar loader3.jar"
That should launch Wuala.
I can give longer directions if needed.
solved
Thanks for the help. I solved it by going to http://puppylinux.org/wikka/wine and downloading from http://smokey01.com/coolpup/wine-1.3.6-p4.pet
Works great.

I copied the URL of the download and tried wget from the console. It worked, albeit slowly. Apparently FireFox did not like the slow connection. Wget was reporting about 4kb/s. I have Mobile broadband with speeds usually between 30kb/s to 130kb/s.
Hey green_dome, I went to find the latest wine so I could make an sfs of it. And you are already doing it. Thanks. This is great. The sfs will go into the Quickpet SFS getter so that people can install in lucid 5.2 with one-click. This is a real service. I am thinking it will be good to have wine available without using any pupsave memory. Thanks again.
Adobe Acrobat runs SLOW in wine 1.2
It's really amazing how well wine is working these days. I use 6 windows programs all the time in my regular working system QuirkyNop 1.2, perfectly reliablly, even when switching between versions and between pet and sfs.
EXCEPT that Adobe Acrobat 4.05 (yes, an ancient version but all I need), which works fine with 1.1.39 p4 pet, loads and runs very slow, a character at a time.
This happens with wine 1.2-i486.pet or wine-1.2.1-1486-sfs4.sfs. Of course I can continue using 1.1.39 but I would on principle prefer to use a later version. Could it be related to the compilation?
(I just found that wine-1.1.41-i486-sfs4-sfs also works with Acrobat, so perhaps I should stick with that.)
This is interesting:
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=847
Now here's another (unrelated) question. In looking for the causes of a loss in pupsave space over time I note that every time I run a program under wine it decreases the space by about .021 MiB. There is a like increase in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Other programs do not do this. Probably normal, and not serious since a reboot or logoff restores it - I was just curious to understand this. Any insight appreciated. Thanks

Dear green_dome,
You are doing a wonderful service for puppy, which is used and appreciated by many. I do understand that you are processing what the wine people produce, and do not expect you to have obscure application-specific answers
I have just tried the new wine-1.1.41-i486-sfs4.sfs and can report that it has the same problem with the Adobe Acrobat, while the older wine-1.1.41-i486-sfs4.sfs works fine with it. Almost seems like a regression. But then wine is a complicated proposition. . . I am happy.

I use the console to install packages from <winetricks>. For help with this I use
Code: Select all
winetricks -h

Wine works well with windows version of FoxitReader, which allows editing of PDF forms (linux version only reads). My own solution was to load a QuickPet SFS version (Lucid), and then replace /root/.wine and /usr/share/wine, directories with links.
edit: also /usr/lib/wine
edit2: SFS contains about 18M of dev files that can be dumped.

Wine 1.2.2
my attempt at compiling Wine 1.2.2
<http://www.wuala.com/puppylinux/version ... -1.2.2_v1/>
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I compiled using puplet: Puppies 4.31.1 by forum member 'ttuuxxx'
I specifically used the files:
puppies-431.1-main-Xserver.iso
devx_430.sfs
puppies-431.1-main-Xserver.iso - [forum post] [mirror 1] [mirror 2]
devx_430.sfs - [forum post] [mirror 1] [mirror 2]

I installed these packages before compiling:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When compiling, I used
Menu entries, Color Setter, and other stuff I got from the file 'winegoodies.tar.gz' provided by forum member 'technosaurus'.
I only made a few changes to the contents of that file.
I deleted the file 'Wine_regedit.desktop'. That appears to be a near duplicate of file 'wine-regedit.desktop'.
I deleted the file 'winetricks' and replaced it with the updated one.
I deleted the '/Startup/' folder which contained a script file 'portableapptray'.

Wine 1.3.9
my attempt at compiling Wine 1.3.9
<http://www.wuala.com/puppylinux/version ... -1.3.9_v1/>
(version 1)
stripped=true
<http://www.wuala.com/puppylinux/version ... -1.3.9_v2/>
(version 2)
stripped=false
When submitting bug reports to WineHQ, it appears a non stripped Wine provides more information than a stripped Wine.
Non stripped = better for squashing bugs.
