boot from android phone

#1 Post by kerryyoung »

I cannot boot from cd using any parameters, notebook hangs at loading kernals. nb is 'everex sa t2053 dual core, 120gb ssd hdrive, Optiarc dvdrw; w/2gb ram.'
My only recourse now if my hardware such as dvd drive is incompatible is to boot from network. btw my live cd does work on other Toshiba) laptop same age. However I dont have server; can I boot from phone using built in wifi hotspot. I dont really want to install puppy on phone even if possible, just use it as usb drive BUT with wifi connectivity only. Also btw I am using pdanet as hotspot.
As u surmized i cant usb boot from phone as flash drive. I cannot even make usb drive as I cannot get into puppy from cd.
If this is possible, it would be a great feature for local or cloud access for any system/group, so isnt specific problem to my dilema.
Nooby as you also surmized.

TRIED ABOUT 6 OF THEM; 5.2 4.3 LUPU 5.2.8 ETC[/b]
thanx again.
I know I have a good live cd, so I am guessing something in my hardware is causing problem, either the cd drive or the ssd drive which I recently installed, a corsair force sata2. even tho the puppy switch pfix=ram should have isolated that.
I have tried all switches on the boot line except the ones requiring command line knowledge. It has been many years since my basic and dos exposure.
I probably dont understand much about networks either, only set up a few home ones for myself. however I am enamoured by the idea of using the phone to boot from especially using wifi. I am going to try to make a wakepup2 ? cd to boot into a usb flash drive after some research. hopefuly it wont be too hard, I just was hoping there was a way using the hotspot feature on the moto razr.

I have promised to not try to give people any help due to me rather
or very confused when it comes to using written text. Sorry!

But I get very curious on what you say here
Edit out my very confusing text.

Now I get what you say. You have to find somebody good at
the Smartphone you have and good at booting puppy from a network.

I would go for a easier solution.

Frugal install of puppy on the internal HD of your everett.
If it has Ms Windows on it there should be at least two way to make that happen.

Lin'nwin by ICPUG or use Unetbootin or any other of the pendrivelinux
such installers of linux.

Use the search link in my signature or if your lucky some clever guy
do explain how to go the over internet server thing. I know nothing about that.

So now when I know I can not help I wish you good luck

I would like to use my phone instead of a usb drive to store puppy linux on (in mini sd card) and boot into puppy without a cd or usb, as my lappy doesnt seem to have the capability to boot from a usb or from my cd/dvd drive for reasons unknown to me. I do have a switch in bios to boot from network.

if I could boot from usb, i would just plug in the phone to the lappy.

can I somehow use my phones wifi ablity to send puppy files to lappy to boot up in ram memmory?

Im guessing now I have to have something to start the boot process and then get files off pen drive or phone even better.
Is there a way to boot up my computer through the network boot option without a server.

or simulate/ emulate a server in my phone?

questions are probably revealing how much I know about the process.

Sad that so few try to help you. I know too little
but this guy seems to have a similar but not exactly
same idea that you have. To boot over the network.

Read if he get good answers and maybe that gives you some hints?
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=78421

How to boot an HP laptop from an iso in a VAIO via lan?

As you can see he has two laptops and you have one laptop
and one smartphone. So maybe your smartphone can not provide
the network with the iso or files while another laptop could do it.

So I am still certain that the easier approach is to do a manual install
of a frugal puppy. But make a bookmark to his thread and check it when it get answers

Is it possible to use the other Toshiba laptop to create a bootable USB drive? If both laptops have ethernet ports, you can use a crossover cable to connect them as a mini-network, then install the PLOP bootloader on the recalcitrant machine to allow booting from the USB.

Sorry, I cannot help with your request about booting from the phone.
Good luck,
Joe

thank you nooby and lazy jw; I will try those suggestions, tho I am still persuing the phone as a pxe agent.

Unfortunately after more research I fear my lap is not compatible with any linux. I tried mint 12 and had the exact same problems, got to kernal and freeze, it probably is my obscure motherboard and via chipset.
I searched for compatible hardware list and my computer is on the list but meager on the drivers (many missing), so needs more code work.

I think I found something in the android forums about using the phone as a pxe server, but still studying, a bit over my head. Thanks again, and will update if I get any progress. :?

there is another thread where the guy is trying to do some tec difficult for no apparent reason, the reason you cant boot from wi fi, is that in order to boot you need to turn the machine and the wifi off and the wifi wont reappear till windows starts which it never would if puppy started, if you see what i mean

its quite possible but a little involved to down load puppy and install it with out the use of a cd player i did it, il link my long thread if you want so you dont waist as much time as i did making daft mistakes

jobo I would be interested in that link, im here to learn, and yes I look like I am going about the problem the hard way, but still after thinking about the concept, it would be really nice to do puppy over the wifi. for many people.
anyway, I will have do dig in and start researching.

I didn't understand your problem
Is you laptop not booting at all?
or does it boot to windows but you want to find alternate ways of booting it as well?
Or are you just looking for a way to boot through wifi?
If you laptop already has windows you can do a frugal install install of puppy linux manually by copying the necessary files
You can also install PLOP boot manager on your had disk and have the computer boot it by default
You can then choose between booting from CD, USB or the hard drive
so if you have a bootable puppy linux usb or any other usb bootable linux like slackware you can run it through the USB instead of loading Windows from the computer

can we take it right back to basics ? what machine have you used to burn your cd and what v of puppy are you using ? thats a late machine there is no good reason why it wont boot up
to state the obvious, either your cd reader is broke or you live cd is suspect, or if youve burn it on another machine some times the cd wont read it. i had a '' bought '' cd that my machine just couldnt see

stick any cd in to see if the optics are working, if you have another cd for a linux distro or even the windows disks stick them in to see if it will boot from them, if it will its the cd or the interface

if so, or even if you cant find any discs, burn another copy using this machine if possible, it only takes about half an hour, ask if you cant do this ? and try again with that its so much easier with a disc its worth checking before you give up and go for the direct install

im not techy enough to follow your esb description, what are you trying to boot ot off ? a memerary stick or a second hard drive, a boot of usb is easy, setting the stick so it will boot from it isnt

when youve explored the cd issue, il talk you through a direct install if you have no joy

I trust this text does explain what he wants to accomplish.

"I am still persuing the phone as a pxe agent. "

I bowed out of the thread due to me know nothing about such.
But I've read that gcmartin and others know a lot about it so ....

Now one problem is that most likely the smartphone need to be
very advanced for to be able to work as a network server?

So like others have suggested. Do try to find easier solutions :)
