Kirk and myself are happy to announce Fatdog 600 beta2. If you didn't look at alpha2 / beta1, since 521 many of the init and setup scripts had been completely rewritten.

FAQ and known problems for beta2.

1. Q: Booting from DVD is slow?
A: Fatdog 600 is optimised for harddisk frugal install.
Booting from DVD is slow, because:
- isolinux isn't really the fastest bootloader around
- Fatdog is bigger than other puppies.

If you LiveCD/DVD often, consider to remaster with "small initrd" (don't include pup_rw - this way you get a pristine copy of Fatdog). This cuts down the boot time by half on my machine.

Crazy question from a noob. Now that we have a Puppy compatible
multiuser OS then for to make it familiar to all the other Linux users
should not spot be named Live Session User or something? shorted
to live instead of spot. Sure it can be me not used to name conventions
but I don't remember that any other Linux have the name spot.

(In case it is Barry that came up with that name I trust that everybody
knows we love him anyway without having to always use that word? )

Many name it live instead? Would that name not be less confusing?
Spot is totally confusing to me despite me have used Puppy since 2008.

Live is what most other distros use? And we are live as root? oops
not really. Root is root and live is a restricted user but frugal is live
in that one don't need to be fully installed.

Compare with Knoppix? That one can do a lot of things being live
without being root? So the name live user is a good one.

The name spot is totally alien to me.

Yeah I know it is old. So Spot does not exist in other Linux distros?
Okay so FatDog by default boot as root. I do get that Root is treated
as the Live session user So the restricted user can have any name
that the user fancy. I kind of get that part. So if I get it at all.

Spot where created by Barry due to him building a single user environ
and needed a name for a new kind of restricted user that has no counter
part in standard linux? Everybody trust we love Barry so no need to keep
a very odd name is it? It create confusion where we does not need it?

Nooby, "live" and "spot" has totally different purpose. In Fatdog, just like in any other puppies, you boot as root in LiveCD, not as non-privileged user like in most other distros. You don't boot as "spot". "spot" is not the user you use to boot from LiveCD. It is a user used to run and contain network programs.
Furthermore, "spot" is puppy and fatdog tradition and has been there since puppy 1.x and fatdog 1.0 ...

Maybe I derail the thread too much. Drop it if it is annoying.
I only get worked up about the unnecessary confusion
when one force a new name on people. Hopefully it is
something that is my personal taste and everybody else
happy about it. But if I should trust my gut feeling the name spot
is keeping people from using FatDog despite being multiuser.

(Being a tech term that is totally alien to them they go to things
that look familiar instead. My experience is that people are
extremely rigid about names on technical things. or just me

in contact with the outer world then. An extra layer of protection?

so no need to give it a totally alien name. Could be named something
that people understand instead of something that is cute but odd.

name it sandbox or something that people are used to get intuitively?

Okay back on topic. This new beta 2 being that much reworked.
Does that mean one should not reuse the old savefile. That one
need to create a new one?

Ooops seems it can reuse the old savefile.
At least with the changes that I had done.
I did not test but it does boot as fast as the
B1. Would you say it is safe to just reuse the
old savefile?

Fatdog does not have "version upgrade" feature - it is removed since when we started 600 because we find that it is more broken than not; and causes more headaches than success. How many times you see the advice in the forum saying "please boot with pfix=ram" or "please delete your previous savefile"? I've never read anyone says "please boot with pfix=upgrade"

Generally speaking, you should start from fresh savefile, but if beta1 savefile works for you then that's great.

That being said, if you don't change any if the system files; you should be able to use beta1 savefile. Of course, if things don't work ... "please boot with savefile=none"

You know that routine you employed to fix the order of drive icons? Works really well

However, it seems the same routine wasn't applied when checking where to save the session!

I chose sda1 and my savefile was found on sda10!!!

Other than that it's all looking pretty good.

I had a similar problem, I specified /sdb2/fatdog64-600 and could not find the savefile anywhere. To solve that problem, I just used the default and then using a different pup, copied the save file from /mnt/home to the subdirectory which is what I did with a2 & b1.

My first extra program was shinobar's latest "get NVIDIA driver" pet which successfully installed the NVIDIA driver. B2 is also looking good with other programs that I normally use.

I have had a few slight problems.
1. Package manager does not install firefox. Although I did install a copy that I'd already downloaded with b1.
2. Both Seamonkey, Firefox and the Package Manager have frozen the desktop several times and would not respond. Corrected with restart using Ctrl>Alt>Backspace and then xwin. With Seamonkey and Package Manager there doesn't appear to be a pattern that causes the desktop freeze up, however Ctrl>+ to resize window always freezes the desktop using Firefox.
3. Wbar pet needs a minor edit to place a symlink in /root/startup.

Did I get unlucky with the SiS SI 7012 chipset? Seems to be detected OK.

Firefox-13.0.1 now installs correctly with the Package Manager.

Question, is it normal for the Chosen Mirror for the Package Manager to always revert back to ibiblio when Package Manager is closed?

I compiled vlc 2.0.1 in fatdog600b2 because I had a feeling that a
firmware pet made by pemasu just might work in fatdog, it did
I installed the vlc pet in my fatdog600b1 install to try it out, I
haven't upgraded this pc which has a hauppauge 150 card installed.

I had --enable-pvr in the ./configure line.

I'll leave compiling vlc to you (should you decide to do it) but I'll
attach the firmware pet to this post.

The pvr is great for listening to the music channels (39 of them I
think) on the satellite without accessing the web at all, or watching
tv of course.

Yes. Do you think it is a good idea to keep the selected mirror across invocations?

EDIT: mirror setting is now preserved across invocations. Will be in the next release.
