Puppy Translator of the Year (2014)
Puppy Translator of the Year (2014)
Hi all,
This is a very unserious poll. Just for fun really.
However, some guys have been doing incredible amounts of work this year, making Puppy available to a much wider world audience.
I'm baffled by the amount of work some of them have put in. My impression is some of them only sleep two hours a day...
Wherever you are on this beautiful planet, please send some love/appreciation to your favourite silent monk
Best regards,
Bert

I am quite new to puppy and I mostly use Fatdog.
I have seen L18L's work in fatdog.
I don't know much about other's work.
So I am voting for him.
Thanks.

It would be totally unfair to choose only one.
Just as I did in the beginning, Xanad wrote almost all Italian translations of Puppy Linux native interfaces himself for a long time, but he did it in half the time it took to me!
iCake is a machine! He never stops translating to both simplified and traditional Chinese, every month he releases pet packages not only for official Puppy builds but also for every single Puppy derivative found in the forum.
And L18L, what would we do without L18L, master of localization? He can not only internationalize applications, but also create new applications himself. Also, he has been making a wondeful job at improving Momanager, our CAT program. I wish I were that good at gettext and programming languages.
Actually, BarryK is not a translator, but he is the Puppy master and he did create Momanager for all of us, simplifying great parts of our job and making all translations compatible between many different versions of Puppy. That's how Puppy Linux became really multilingual.
Before Momanager, all localization work had to be done from the beginning for every new release of Puppy Linux, meaning that translations were incompatible between versions. This made it really difficult to make language packs, but it didn't stop people from trying. In that time, one person in particular, with his amazing skills, had always worked hard to make those versions multilingual. Most of his work is still present in current Puppy versions. We should give Shinobar a medal of honor, to the oldest Puppy Linux translator active in the forum. He's still providing support for Japanese language.

Hard work!
Only considerations:
Without the experience, patience and constancy of Vicmz I could never be so fast. For the first steps with gettext L18L was a good teacher and very few lessons I started to produce the first files 'gettextized'. But also manuals about gettext written by Don570 showed me the way.
Two utopias:
1) a space of exchange of translators and gettextizers
2) a rethinking of the developers and programmers to stop and review their projects and check for all the missing parts of locales.
... for a Puppy translatable to 100%! I do not like the work done in half ...
The data are clear, page views Italian are very high, nearly 400,000 (new+old) in less than one year. Puppy localized attracts many people ... other languages other puppers

Wow, six people have voted already!
@ vicmz, thanks for your great post.
You are right, Shinobar should be mentioned too! I was just thinking about this year. Speaking about Puppy's glorious past, another medal should go to rodin.s!!!
@ xanad, hard work indeed
I do not think your "utopias" have to remain utopian...just make enough noise about it here in the forum. I think most translators already understand what you are saying.
utopia 1 should be easy.
utopia 2 is the difficult one, the herding-cats-problem again
Thanks all!

I agree. Wish there was another way to express appreciation than this simple poll system...vicmz wrote:It would be totally unfair to choose only one.

But the point is this. Without a serious project on the output of the new versions, all the work becomes useless. Continue to produce versions not completely localizable gives an idea of chaos and not reliability. In the globalized world will lose their cultural identity ... is not required to know the English language to use puppy and lose 'ignorant' users is absolutely not open-source, the opposite of the linux concept. Only those who will launch a new version translated to 100% will be the winner.Bert wrote: utopia 2 is the difficult one, the herding-cats-problem again

Others contributors not listed are all programmers like Zigbert 'the 1st method of localization' (remember usr/bin/app/locale?), rcrsn51, Don570 an others that precise as a swiss watch localize their every program and 01micko, phil666 and radky who have started to do so. The first version of puppy localized if I remember correctly was the Toutou 4.3.1 French by esmourguit.

unsung hero -> silent monk
I have been voted for the creator of momanager.
Everything in one script! that is wow or is it woofwoof?
Our additions, Forked Fast MoManager, are just maintenance.
Yet missing MoManager for dummies....
Big sample is Android:
First choice is language out of the box
I am trying to get similiar with Fatdog64
and having multi languages simultan...............
...and have Puppy on an Android tablet.
Special minds go to rodin.s:
Hope you are well, Sergej.

Thanks to all of you, without you nothing would have been done.Once upon a time the Beatles sung and wrote:He's a really nowhere man

making all his nowhere plans

Isn't he a bit like you
and me?

@L18L
I do not know yet Fatdog64, the time available, I am sorry, but it is not much but the versions are so many.
I'm glad you're succeeding in.
Status quo.
Concentrating only on slacko570 and precise571 for 8 months and recently on Tahr600 I arrived at 99% of the translation using different
gimmicks. There are still many to make translatable spash and xmessage and the following programs:
flsynclient
gfnrename
gmeasures
gpptp
psip32
wcpufreq
video_upgrade
gtk.icons
petspec
34 new files gettextized and several fixes and manual intervention. But to bring puupy in a foreign language now need a langpack of 8.4 Mb . An analysis of the langpack highlights the surgery done.
If there was a workspace as claims ASRI, with you as a reference, the undertaking would become possible ...
Sitting in his nowhere land. Hey man, in a virtual space the land is not necessary...

No land, no country, no territory... it is all about language(s) onlyxanad wrote: Hey man, in a virtual space the land is not necessary...
He will read this I am sure...If there was a workspace as claims ASRI,
Italian, French and German..... all in one sounds like Swiss
One of the goodies with Fatdog is:
no langpack. All langs in one SFS!

You've piqued my curiosity, I started downloading ... but I would first complete open projects before starting a new adventure. I do not know C and stopped with the files mentioned above. For the others do not find a way to put a good gettext. And I'm looking for a system to detect all spash present in one shot to see how many are. Questions pending news for the new thread..

What about actual downloads, can you tell?xanad wrote:...

I would be very curious too, but I'd have to ask the moderators. From the Italian forum are today 1,424 in less than a month. But the relationship between murga forum and italian forum is 40:1! So ideally 40 x 1.424 in a month ...step wrote:What about actual downloads, can you tell?
