Fatdog64-700/701 [April 22 2015] [CLOSED]

#1 Post by fatdog »

EDIT: Fatdog64 702 Final has been released. Discussion here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=102737

______________________________

Kirk and james are happy to announce the release of Fatdog64 701 on 22 April 2015.

Fatdog64 701 is a maintenance update to Fatdog 700, containing rolled-up updates that have been applied and available after 700 was released. New users are recommended to try 701, existing users do not need to upgrade unless they have problems that have been addressed in this thread prior to 701 release. The "fatdog-update" packages will continue to be refreshed and should be applicable to both 700 and 701 for foreseeable future.

Note: Fatdog64 701 features the same kernel as 700 (3.18.7). This is a conscious decision to ensure that all existing 3rd party kernel modules for 700 will continue to work in 701.

Updates:
- Mesa-10.4.7
- GTK 2.24.27
- Seamonkey 2.33.1
- Flash plugin 11.2.202.457
- Sandbox now runs with separate pid/mount namespace for better sandboxing
- xf86-input-evdev rebuilt with code-remap support, enabling hotkey mapping for keys previously unmappable
- ROX-Filer updated with mikeb patch for i18n (thanks mikeb)
- ROX-Filer updated to be able to show file comments
- links can use framebuffer other than the first one (use FRAMEBUFFER=/dev/fb1 or something)

New features:
- Find'N'Run script included, accessible by Alt-F3 hotkey (thanks SFR)
- Internet tethering using USB or bluetooth (under Control Panel → Network) - tested with Android phones only.
- Working bluetooth send/receive.
- Fatdog startup manager to control desktop startup programs (find under Control Panel → Desktop → Fatdog Startup Manager)
- MTP browser and simple-mtpfs now included providing out of box support for MTP devices (find under Control Panel → Network) (thanks 01micko)
- Meld (GUI file difference viewer) is now included in devx. sshuttle also added to devx.
- scrypt and scrypt_gui for better password protection
- PSIP 1.4 now included
- pmcputemp included (thanks 01micko) - activate it using Fatdog startup manager
- bugreport.sh - information reporting tool for reporting bugs.
- deb2txz script included - compatible .deb packages can now be installed directly (by right-click).
- n2n-v1 (easy vpn)
- rox-encfs now uses afo when available (afo is also included, thanks jafadmin)
- Faster version of makepkg; pkgtools now supports uninstall script (name it as install/slack-uninstall.sh). Still 100% compatible with plain slackware package.

and numerous bug fixes and fine tunings.
Major contributor in this release is SFR who has found and fixed a few annoying bugs.

Get it from the usual place, links at the bottom of this post.

Fatdog64 701 does not update from Fatdog64 700 or any other earlier versions..

------------

Fatdog64 700 FINAL was released on 22 February 2015.

Fatdog64-700 is first release of Fatdog64 700 series, a new major series of Fatdog64 Linux, replacing the venerable Fatdog64-600 (whose last release was 631). This is the first official release of Fatdog64-700, after a series of test releases (alpha1, beta1, beta2, rc) over the course of over 6 months.

Rebuilt from the ground up, Fatdog64 is now based on LFS (Linux From Scratch) and BLFS (Beyond LFS). The base of Fatdog64-700 is based on LFS 7.5 (the latest when the first alpha of 700 was released); this final release has many packages updated to the later or latest BLFS packages, plus others not defined by LFS/BLFS. The 600 series base packages were built using T2 build scripts and updates were built in Fatdog64-600 itself. For the 700 series, James wrote a set of build scripts that are used to build not only the base packages, but also the packages in the repo. Now if a base package needs to be updated, in less than a day the everything can be rebuild from source files to a bootable iso.

Changes from Fatdog64 631:

Updates:

* All new base packages built from LFS and BLFS 7.5
* Linux 3.18.7
* Gcc 4.8.3
* Glibc 2.19
* GTK+ 2.24.25 with Glib 2.38
* Qt 4.8.5 (partial)
* Xorg-1.16.3
* Mesa-10.4.3
* ALSA 1.0.27.2
* VLC-2.1.15
* ffmpeg 2.1.3
* CUPS 1.7.2
* Abiword 3.0
* openssl 1.0.2
* Seamonkey 2.32
* Flash plugin 11.2.202.442
* ffDiaporama replaces avidemux
* gslapt replaces Fatdog Package Manager
* Various system tools updates
* Hundreds of other package upgrades.

New features:

Change of package format from PET packages to Slackware-style TXZ packages.
Xorg now installed to /usr. There is no more /usr/X11, /usr/X11R6, or /usr/X11R7.
All 64-bit libraries now live in /lib64 and /usr/lib64. /lib and /usr/lib are now reserved for 32-bit libraries.
/lib and /usr/lib are no longer bind-mounted (or symlinked) to /lib64 and /usr/lib64.
Internationalisation. Many scripts are now gettext-ed, thanks to the continous effort from forum member L18L
German language pack in fd64-nls.sfs and in fatdog-i18n package, thanks to L18L
Firefox is not included, but will be downloaded upon first access.
Google-chrome is not included, but will be downloaded upon first access.
Firefox/flashplayer/google-chrome updaters.
Volume labels on drive icons.
fatdog-clean-whiteout.sh script to clean aufs whiteouts.
Updaters (and installers) for flash-plugin, Firefox, Google-Chrome, and Java (in addition to LibreOffice installer from 631).

and numerous bug fixes and fine tunings.

Major contributor in this release is L18L who has worked tirelessly to make Fatdog64 more usable for non-English users (Fatdog64-600 series was strictly English-only).

Changes from 700rc:

Updates:

Linux 3.18.7
Various fixes from problems reported in 700rc forum thread.

New Features:

getjava script to download latest java and pack it as SFS.

Special thanks to SFR and all our testers during alpha, beta1, beta2 and rc stages.

You can find release announcements for 700rc, beta2, beta1 and alpha1.

Get it from the usual location in ibiblio or one of its mirrors: aarnet, uoc.gr, and nluug.nl.

SFS-es are here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/sfs/700/ and on ibiblio's mirrors too.

Fatdog64 700 does not update from Fatdog64 631 or any other earlier versions..

Notes:

1. Touchscreen users: to do right-click: touch the screen with one finger, *keep touching*, then touch another finger, then release both. If this doesn't work or if your touchscreen doesn't work at all (where it worked in previous versions), remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-touchscreen-rightclick.conf.

2. New UEFI flash drive installetion method: http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/web/fa ... rive2.html

****WARNING*****

In the repo you'll find some new packages built for qt5, such as vlc-qt5-2.2.1, ffDiaporama-qt5-2.2 and some others. The warning is that if you install ether the new vlc or ffdiaporama, the package manager will also need to install the package ffmpeg2-2.6, which will break anything that is compiled against the old ffmpeg.
In the future there will be a 710 release and right now we're thinking that will have qt5 replacing qt4, so that's why those packages are there. Also those packages have not been tested much.

**** Notes *****

A new fatdog-update-700-noarch-1.txz package has been uploaded to the repo. This package contains the latest Fatdog base scripts, suitable for installing via gslapt. Once installed, however, it cannot be uninstalled (if you try Fatdog will definitely stops working), but you can always update it periodically to get the latest update.

fatdog-update-700 will continue to be updated as long as updates are still compatible with the 700 base. It will end when we move to 710 (which is still in the far future) and then we will have fatdog-update-710 for the 710 series.

This package only contains the updated scripts. It is *NOT* a service pack that contains all sort of updates. It does not add new binary packages or browser updates or kernel modules etc - it just provides update scripts, things like rc.services fixes, the new findnrun script, etc. It will not overwrite your preferences, wallpaper setting, openbox theme, etc - but if you have customised some of fatdog scripts, they will get overwritten.

You still need to update openssl, flash-plugin, etc to get updates for those critical components.

**** Notes *****

- nvidia and amd-catalyst driver have been updated to the repo.

- 32bit compatibility library has been updated to use the latest slacko (Slacko6 beta, 5.9.3) which in turn is based on Slackware 14.1. Thanks 01micko.

- Wine has been updated into 1.7.39 from green_dome (the latest at the time of writing), and contains an optional wine-depends.sfs (this is the sfs used by green_dome (aka version2013) when he built the wine). Thanks green_dome/version2013.

Ok, downgraded the kernel, fresh savefile, installed usual stuff, added my tweaks - all is up and running.
XLock (+dclock) finally works with UTF-8 and no need for additional X fonts. :)
___________

EDIT: Small bug in getjava.sh; mkdir is missing -p switch:

Code: Select all

mkdir -p $WORKDIR; cd $WORKDIR
OOTB /tmp/getjava/ dir does not exist.

Congrats &
Greetings!

In the prior FATDOG RC thread,

Is this procedure described on any FATDOG webpage or in a post anywhere? If not, could you share your method of doing so?

Thanks in advance

Downloaded the iso in Win8.1 and installed to a 7GB Fat32 partition on a usb3 flash drive using Pendrivelinux.com Universal USB Installer. Changed bios from UEFI to Legacy having disabled Fast boot and secure boot. Booted up and shut down creating an encrypted save file into the flash drive's other larger partition which is Ext4. Been playing with it since without problem. Hoping this can be my primary OS from now on. Many thanks to kirk, jamesbond and all the other contributers - loving this dog so far.

Edit. Minor issue in shutting down, after drives stop have to use power button to switch off. Also, Acer Aspire ES1-512 trackpad not working so using a usb mouse. Trackpad works in Mint so just needs the driver?

Downloaded the iso, installed to a directory on a SSD and boot using grub.
menu.lst wrote:# Linux bootable directory config begins
title fatdog700 /dev/sda3)
root (hd0,2)
kernel /fatdog700/vmlinuz savefile=direct:device:sda3:/fatdog700save dofsck
initrd /fatdog700/initrd
# Linux bootable
Note, the directory fatdog700save was empty at start.
This way the first dialog was load_sfs.sh :!:

Not bad because I want to load NLS.sfs.

Bit I wrote a little script which loads it automatically if the Nls-sfs is in the same directory as the savedirectory:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#
[ -d /usr/share/locale/fr ] && exit 0 # nls.sfs loaded already
SFS=fd64-nls_700.sfs # no automatic here to find this file name

. /etc/BOOTSTATE # read SAVE_DEV_MOUNT

if [ -f ${SAVE_DEV_MOUNT}/${SFS} ]; then
  load_sfs.sh --load $SAVE_DEV_MOUNT/$SFS
else
  if [ "${SAVE_DEV_MOUNT}" ]; then
    Xdialog --title "Native Language Support" --infobox "If you had copied \
    or moved \n\n ${SFS} \n into ${SAVE_DEV_MOUNT} (${SAVEFILE_DEVICE}) \n
    \nthen NLS would have automatically been loaded" 0 0 30000
  else
    Xdialog --title "Native Language Support" --infobox "Find ${SFS} \n
    and load it please" 0 0 30000
  fi
fi
exit 0
Named it nls and put it into root/Startup of initrd.
No save and reboot.... nls automatically loaded. :D

EDIT
code changed, removed: rm $0

Our of curiosity, does the kernel ship with I/O accounting support (CONFIG_TASKSTATS, CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT, CONFIG_TASK_IO_ACCOUNTING) ?

It's all looking good so far. Are there any Samsung drivers for printing and scanning model C1860FW.

They are available for 32 bit http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=66614

That looks pretty strange to me, multi was intended to be used with DVD-RW. Maybe James can chime in on this if he has any thoughts.
I take it Java is not installed by default unless you run the getjava script?
That's correct.
EDIT: Small bug in getjava.sh; mkdir is missing -p switch:
Thanks, fixed.
Also, Acer Aspire ES1-512 trackpad not working so using a usb mouse. Trackpad works in Mint so just needs the driver?
See: http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/web/faqs/touchpad.html
might want to try installing libinput and xf86-input-libinput from the package manager.

No.
