PS: Fatdog 702 Final discussion starts from Page 6 of this thread.

Kirk and james are happy to announce the release of Fatdog64 702 RC on 7 February 2016.

Fatdog64 702 is a maintenance update to Fatdog 701/700, containing rolled-up updates that have been applied and available after 701 was released. New users are recommended to try 702, existing users do not need to upgrade unless they have problems that have been addressed in this thread prior to 702 release. The "fatdog-update" packages will continue to be refreshed and should be applicable to both 700, 701 and 702 for foreseeable future.

Note: Fatdog64 702 features the same kernel as 700 (3.18.7). This is a conscious decision to ensure that all existing 3rd party kernel modules for 700 will continue to work in 701.

If you want a newer kernel, a 4.3.3 kernel is available http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/kernels/700/ or ibiblio's mirrors. Get both vmlinuz and the corresponding kernel-modules.sfs, then follow instructions on http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/web/faqs/kernel.html, or you can use the Fatdog Updater.

Fatdog64 702 does not update from Fatdog64 701, 700 or any other earlier versions.

Get it from the usual location in ibiblio or one of its mirrors: aarnet, uoc.gr, and nluug.nl.

SFS-es are here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/sfs/700/ and on ibiblio's mirrors too.

Credits for this release:
---
SFR (many bug reports and fixes, contributed packages), L18L (internationalisation and localisation, locale-switcher, momanager, translations, etc), step (bug report and fixes), and all other testers and contributors.

We also thank all who supplement Fatdog repository with many excellent contributed packages.

_______________________________________

Previous version: Fatdog64 701

_______________________________________

Looking beyond 702: 702 will be the last of the 700 run. But 700 series will continue with 710, which is rebuilt from scratch again (using the same version of compiler and glibc but slightly different configuration) and features a massive package updates. Existing contributed packages from 700 are expected to work with 710 except in very rare case. 710 is currently in alpha stage.

===== ORIGINAL 702 RC2 ANNOUNCEMENT =====

Fatdog64 702 RC2 is released on 30 Jan 2016, incorporating fixes and feedback (where applicable) up to page 4 of this thread, is released here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/iso/702rc2. Mirrors should also have this shortly (24 hours at most).

A few things in RC2 (and RC) but not mentioned earlier:
a) Now it includes bonjour support, so all local machines in the same network can be addressed as "${hostname}.local" (e.g. if your machine is "odroid" you can access it as "odroid.local", from all machines in the same network).
b) right-click openbox menu is now sync-ed with panel-menu (RC2 only)
c) if you use multisession, you can choose the compression-level used for making the SFS at save time.

The rest of the notes from original RC (moved below to 2nd post) still applies. I have moved the original RC files to the "old" directory in their respective places.

Consider this RC2 as an "updated" RC, on its way to become Final. Testing period for this RC2 will run for about a week. If there is no problem with RC2, this will become the 702 Final.

Thank you for all testers and contributors.

Hello jamesbond

Thank you for fd702, I'm testing it on my new Braswell board...

I updated the kernel to 4.3.3 following your instructions, before I installed it.

I have only tested briefly, but I have found that video rendering in VLC is "speckled" the same as I had with fd700 and kernel 3.18.7 with i915.preliminary_hw_support=1. So the problem is not the kernel version.

Tahrpup64 with a 4.3.0 kernel and VLC 2.1.6 doesn't have the problem, but I had updated the display driver stack to the latest versions that I could find on Launchpad before I tested it.

Looking at your list of updates, the xf86 intel driver has not been updated. I know Intel has not released an official update to .917 for over a year, but people seem to just build from git. The only other difference was libdrm 2.4.65 whereas on Tahrpup64 I have 2.4.66.

I'll try using the same Intel driver that I installed in Tahrpup64.

Thank you for your work on fatdog

EDIT

I checked a new Tahrpup64 install, without updating the drivers but with kernel 4.3.0 and VLC renders correctly. The intel_drv.so is noticeably bigger that fatdog's

Installation

following Fatdog Help: Installing / Removing Fatdog64 on a flash drive for UEFI and BIOS booting is my prefered method now on a 8GiB USB-3.0 stick.

Fatdog Help
Advantage:
- very fast, never hidden in a browser window on another virtual desktop
- translatable with just one translation file (bark if interested)

Cosmetic issue:
Generic Name should be different from Name (see screeny)

Caveat NativeLanguageSupport
:
fd64-nls_702.sfs does not exist.; it is fd64-nls_702rc.sfs.

/tmp permissions in fd64-nls_702rc.sfs

#11 Post by mories »

Permissions of the /tmp directory are incorrect in the SFS and override basesfs when fd64-nls_702rc.sfs is loaded.

clean (frugal) install on lenovo x201

on boot hanging immediately after first line in boot sequence, hdd icon stayed on and fan ramped up

tried ctrl-alt-backspace and boot continued, connected to wifi, added chrome and rebooted creating savefile and now unable to reboot to working os, stuck at first boot line

will delete and try again & report back

:)

edit: deleted, re=downloaded ISO and reinstalled with clean savefile, all worked fine.....

Minor oversight in Service & Startup managers:

Code: Select all

# diff /aufs/pup_ro/etc/servicemanager /etc/servicemanager
9c9
< RESERVED=":S01logging:S40network:README.txt:"
---
> RESERVED=":S01logging:S40network:README.md:"
#
# diff /aufs/pup_ro/usr/bin/fatdog-startup-manager.sh /usr/bin/fatdog-startup-manager.sh
22c22
< RESERVED=":README.txt:"
---
> RESERVED=":README.md:"
#
Yeah, mdview is really nice and fast!
I spotted one not converted link though, in /usr/share/doc/fd-help/no-savefile.md: [**search**](boot-options.html)

Another minor glitch in Service Manager is that 3 VBox services' names (vboxautostart-service, vboxballoonctrl-service & vboxweb-service) are truncated to 'service' alone.
Maybe something like this would suffice..?

Code: Select all

# diff /aufs/pup_ro/usr/sbin/fatdog-service-manager.sh /usr/sbin/fatdog-service-manager.sh
171c171
< 		*-*) SNAME=${1#*-} ;;
---
> 		??-*) SNAME=${1#*-} ;;

Thanks for this hint. :D
@all

Code: Select all

sed -i 's/boot-options.html/boot-options.md/' /usr/share/doc/fd-help/ no-savefile.md
will fix it.

So I will have to look myself Why Fatdog does not use my savefile? :oops:

BTW, I have been playing with fatdog-remaster and dd'ing the remaster to usb.
/usr/sbin/fix-usb.sh was always exiting because of "partition 3 not empty".
Success after commenting the exit:
/usr/sbin/fix-usb.sh wrote:### paranoia check - partition 3 must be empty
check=$(sfdisk -uS -l $1 2>/dev/null| awk -v dev=${1}3 '$1==dev {print $6}')
case $check in

echo "Aborting."
# exit
esac

Hmm, no probs here...
How your boot config file looks like?
And where's your save{file|folder} located?
___________

I noticed that GIMP no longer supports loading and exporting to JPEG due to missing 'libexif' library.
___________

There's a problem with that technicolor "bubble" GTK theme.
Not new, happens also in 701.
Enabling it breaks displaying of SVG images in some ways:
- thumbnails in ROX-Filer
- Xpad's icon in tray
- ROX AppDirs (e.g. rox-clock's)
(see screenshot)

It didn't break my Swatch and CPUTemp tray apps (which also use SVG), maybe because the generated images are too simple..?
This is the only theme that uses 'svg' engine, so perhaps that's the actual culprit.
___________

Btw, how about unifying the look of QT apps to match the current GTK theme?

Code: Select all

sed -i 's/^style=.*/style=GTK+/' /root/.config/Trolltech.conf
Greetings!

Thank you everyone for your feedback. Keep them coming :)

@LateAdopter
I can update libdrm. I will see what I can do with the intel driver; I'm a bit reluctant from git because sometimes they break things (I mean, they fix one thing and break another). Any idea on what version of intel driver is used by Tahrpup64?

@L18L - the NLS name of _702rc.sfs is only temporary. It will become 702.sfs upon release.

@L18L - make the waitdev a bit longer may be?

@mories - the /tmp permission in underlying SFS doesn't matter. /tmp is usually overmounted with tmpfs, which will automatically set the correct permission.

@ally - x201 - is this bios/uefi machine? boot hanging - did you get into graphical screen? You said pressing ctrl-alt-backspace, that would imply that you get into a graphical desktop. But I'm not sure if I understand that you're trying to say.

@SFR - thank you for the patches.

@L18L - fix-usb.sh tries to be careful. If you have a 3rd partition in your disk, it is possible that fix-usb.sh may accidentally wipe it off, so it refuses to make the changes (the "paranoia" comment explains it :lol:)

@SFR - I have libexif installed, so I didn't have the problem. I will add libexif to basesfs. It seems to be used by a few others too.

@SFR - gtk-chtheme something crazy and it deletes gdk-pixbuf-loaders cache. I need to look into that and patch it *NOT* to do that. To fix your problem, just run "gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache" and all should be well again.
EDIT: No, that's not it. It's a bug in GTK (or GDK maybe), if you restart Xorg then everything will be well again.

@SFR - Trolltech.conf has a few sections. Which section should the "style" preference go?

Good to know there are no probs at your side.
I have been using dd to sdc, remaster and fix-usb.sh.

..aaahhh
I should have edited boot config files at remaster process
so that partition 3 will be searched for save file.
jamesbond wrote:@L18L - the NLS name of _702rc.sfs is only temporary. It will become 702.sfs upon release.
Just noted this so that others can find it. (It is not listed by sfsmanager...)

I have been trying this too. But no, see above.

It did not wipe it off but it was the only way to get access to partition 3 again.

Hmm, that doesn't work for me, images stay broken...
The only way is to restart X or the affected apps.
jamesbond wrote:@SFR - Trolltech.conf has a few sections. Which section should the "style" preference go?
It's style variable on 8th line, which is empty by default:

Code: Select all

[Qt]
font="DejaVu Sans,11,-1,5,50,0,0,0,0,0"
Palette\active=@Invalid()
Palette\inactive=@Invalid()
Palette\disabled=@Invalid()

embedFonts=true
style=
doubleClickInterval=400
...
Btw, spot also has this file as well as newly created users - I'm not sure where this file actually comes from, couldn't find any template anywhere...

Yes, we cross-posted. I just think about how the stuff works, and I think I can offer an explanation why it doesn't work but there seems to be now way to get this fixed other than restarting the app (no need to restart entire Xorg, just the app).
TL;DR: Changing theme is done by re-reading gtkrc files. GTK isn't reloading pixbuf loaders when re-reading gtkrc files.

[/quote]Okay thanks, I was looking at the running system so the Trolltech.conf is a bit convoluted. I'll see if it the intended effect. Does it work on Qt5 too? 710 will come with Qt5 by default ...
Btw, spot also has this file as well as newly created users - I'm not sure where this file actually comes from, couldn't find any template anywhere...
Spot's one is its own copy. All other new users will have file inherited from /root. In mainstream distro you will inherit them from /etc/skel, in Fatdog the /etc/skel is actually /root :wink:

@L18L - glad to you find the cause. I'm surprised that partition 3 isn't searched automatically, though. The initrd code is supposed to look for all partitions, unless you told it otherwise.

cheers!
