ETH0 Address (Telnet Device)

My laptop is connected to a remote device that I am trying to telnet. The remote device has DHCP turned on. When the LAN is connected and disconnected, the screen indicates that there is a connection lost/established.

So, since 'IFCONGIG' does not tell me the address of my device, what other methods are there?

There won't be until communication is established.
It is like trying to tell who is at the other end of the phone without answering it. Caller ID will tell you the number, but it can't tell you who is actually using it.

@highway_man: More details please. What kind of device is this? How are you connected? Directly with an ethernet cable? Are your computer and this device both on a LAN managed by a switch or router?

How do you ordinarily get an IP address?

Maybe you just need to run "dhcpcd eth0" to get an IP address from the device's DHCP server.
