@overall net security (& freedom) purposes, was this wise??

#1 Post by belham2 »

Hi all,

Not sure if all of you have been aware of this drama the past year, and especially as it escalated this past month and reached a crescendo the past 3-4 days. Will we all look back one day and realize this act (or lapse) was the first beginning of the end of the Internet as we now know it? Will the assault in earnest begin as the so-called "balkanization" of the net begins? I honestly don't know, maybe it is much ado about nothing. Oe, taking it even further, maybe this is what is/was needed to finally put the first death nail into the coffin of our ideas about the internet as we now know & think about it. It's no secret Google, Amazon, FB, Alibaba, etc around the world have been pushing for their ability to create a completely closed (fully uncrackable) ether net world---all in, (cough, cough) their claim that they want their customers to be safe & secure. They call it 'Internet 2', among other naming schemes, and increasingly, lump it in with the "Internet of Everything" talk (which is scary---when you think about things like Google Nest and all, same with Amazon's stuff). And this all doesn't even factor in what many gov'ts around the world are going to start doing with the now existing Internet 1 as we know it :(

(plz note for the linked articles below, which give quick synopsis/reading of this whole thing: normally I don't give much credence to the quite a bit of craziness the "Breitbart.com" news site comes up with. But in this case, they hit the nail on the head, with short, concise, easy to understand articles)

[Edit: the above is a summary of the discussion from the guys at lxle linux, thought it was great, and that more needed to be aware of what happened so posted it here for us puppy-goers]

Yes, the world should feel blessed that the government that has had the role of overseeing the Internet up until now had the integrity and decency not to abuse its power and influence (couch couch).

Touche', Solo!

You know, I should really look at getting a place at that retirement oasis of Chongjin or, maybe even Duba. Among many things, most definitely will have more net and free speech freedoms there and not have to worry about the big, bad things the US guv does to their citizens.

There is no altruism (except in people's arguments, it seems) when it comes to free speech existing over and/or with a financial & nation-state medium (the Net). No one is pure and untainted in this regard.

It's a matter of picking your poison.

And I know which poison of which location I'd choose time and time and time again, and I haven't even lived back home there for over a few decades now. Personally, I live in the Old World (work-related), and here it is supposedly the top free of everything. Yup, it sure is....

Interesting times ahead indeed, my friend. Internet 1 needs to die anyway, as it was never built with the intention of how it is now used.

Most of the internet is all ads, tracking and spam nowadays. Would love to see them kill it all so we can start fresh with pure html and no javascript etc. again. Puppy Linux Forum is about the only place left that hasn't been corrupted by "Internet 2".

I have not comments yet on the links content but the I am suspicious of the source. breitbart is an alt-right news outlet:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alt-right
https://www.theguardian.com/media/green ... -alt-right
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/201 ... tbart-news

Anyway, I also see your last link was an AFP source. I decided to read that one. Nothing in the story reflected the tone of the orginal post.

Well, you had to go there.

So, having picked your poison I hope you can at least stomach reading it's prescription.
