Now, then.
For anyone who's decided to try the 'Chrooted' Iron69,SFS in 4.3.11 'Phoenix', and is happy to leave it at that, you're all set.
Some of you may want to use Firefox 68 esr instead (I know there's a lot of folks who are very suspicious of Google's motives, and want to avoid contact with them wherever possible). That's fine.
Some of you may decide you want to use Firefox as well as Iron. Nowt wrong wi' that, either!
I've put together solutions for both of these latter scenarios.
-----------------------------------------------
Firefox 68 only
1. Download the separate chroot 'jail' from here:-
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LmYHID ... sp=sharing
2. Unzip the tarball, and place the resulting /cont directory into /mnt/home, thereby keeping it outside of Puppy-space. THEN (v.imp), sym-link /mnt/home/cont back into Puppy's file-system at '/'. The scripts won't find it otherwise..!
3. Download the FF68esr chroot 'add-on' from here:-
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NHKHq4 ... sp=sharing
4. This will install the 'portable' Firefox directory within the 'jail', along with the necessary scripts & Menu .desktop entry to control it from outside.
5. FF68esr should fire up from the Menu entry. Enjoy!
------------------------------------------------------
Firefox 68 & Iron 69
Assuming you have the chrooted Iron SFS already loaded, I recommend the following:-
1. Copy the /cont directory, from '/', across to /mnt/home in its entirety. The whole thing, just as it is.
2. You can now unload the Iron SFS package. We won't be needing it anymore, since the 'jail' is now where we want it for the remaining steps.
3. As above, before going any further, sym-link /mnt/home/cont back into Pup's main file-system at '/'.
4. Again, as above, download & install the FF68-chroot_addon.pet. This will add a Menu entry for FF68, in addition to Iron's, along with the necessary scripts to tie it all together.
5. Enjoy using this amazing old Puppy with up-to-date browsers!
---------------------------------------------------
(If anybody would like 'regular' FF-Quantum instead, let me know. I'll put together a chroot-addon package for it.)

Okey-dokey. For anybody mad enough to want to try this 'chrooted' Iron 69 browser, here you go:-
https://drive.google.com/file/d/12FfIx4 ... sp=sharing
Have fun, and.....enjoy. All 1100+ MB of it when unpacked! (Don't forget, there's also some 230 MB of browser in there, in addition to nearly 900 MB of Tahr 606.....)
Mike.
package sym-link-scripts.pet the rest of the packages work just fine.
thanks for all the hard work!
Cool,

@ tanker60:-
Do be aware that the SFS loading mechanism wasn't a standard part of Puppy in those days, so we need to add it manually. The SFS_load .pet from Shinobar is mentioned further back in the thread.
You can find the 'sfs_load' .pet here:-
http://shinobar.server-on.net/puppy/opt ... ad-2.4.pet
Install it. Then, go into /mnt/home. Right-click on the Iron_chroot.sfs package, and you should see an entry for 'sfs_load' in the context menu. Click on that, and follow the instructions.
That should do the trick.
Let us know if that works for you.
------------------------------------
@ Darren:-
Thanks for the Packit .pet, mate. The up-to-date versions of this simply won't work in 'Phoenix'; I'm guessing some of the newer compression formats weren't part of the original 431.
I'm going to give that libfreetypefont.pet a try, too; see if it'll help with the way fonts are appearing.
Cheers.
Mike.
Um; ri-i-ight. Okay. Silly question perhaps, but,er..........you have loaded the SFS, haven't you?tanker60 wrote:downloaded iron 69. put it in mnt home , won't run for me . am i missing a pet

Forgot to add that if you're trying out either of the previously-mentioned chrooted browser scenarios, after placing the /cont directory in /mnt/home, you need to sym-link /mnt/home/cont back into the main file-system at '/'.
If you don't, the scripts won't find it. I've amended the original post to reflect this.

Hi, Darren/all:-
Now, then. Another wee 'offering'....
I confess to really liking tuxxx's VLC 0.8.6. I'd never seen the GTK2 version before, and, although a bit basic - modern VLC has spoilt me! - I think it's rather neat,
However, its file format support is, necessarily, dated. It won't, for instance, support the relatively modern WebM format, one which is now coming into its own, with more and more uploaded media being in this format.
Personally, I have tons of WebM stuff, and would hate not to have access. So; for those of you who are using the 'chroot' container environment for the up-to-date browsers, here's a .pet for VLC. This doesn't install any VLC files; all it does is to let you access the VLC 2.1.6 'Rincewind' that's already a part of Tahrpup, which forms the basis of the container, so.....just a bunch of scripts, really, plus a MenuEntry.
There's one more thing to note. After installation, you'll notice a new directory in /root, called 'Chrt-MEDIA'. The reason for this is quite simple; chrooted applications cannot access anything outside of the 'jail' while running. It's like a giant sandbox, in the way it's set up to run. The .pet also creates a directory in the root directory of the chroot 'jail', simply called 'MEDIA'. These two directories are sym-linked together, so anything you want to play in VLC will have to be copied to /root/Chrt-MEDIA first (otherwise, VLC will have nothing to work with!)
When you run the chrooted VLC, and want to open a file, look in /root/MEDIA in the file-selection window. You'll find whatever you've copied to /root/Chrt-MEDIA in Puppy itself.
Pet attached below. Hope some of you may find it useful!
-------------------------
EDIT:- (28th August) - Just to add, this sym-linked pair of directories will also allow access to anything you've downloaded with either of the chrooted browsers, so.....it's a two-way thing, really. Useful in both directions..!
Mike.

@ tanker60:-
Hang about, hand about. Don't go and re-install just yet.....
You're not running with the 'normal' set-up, are you? You're being awkward....., aren't you??
(*hee, hee*)
Usually, if running from a LiveCD, you don't have a /mnt/home, but in your case.....running from a LiveCD, but with a save-file.....gawd. I honestly, truly don't know; it's not a set-up I've ever used before.
I do know ONE thing, though. You're cutting it fine, space-wise, with a 2.5 GB savefile. That Iron_chroot SFS, when unpacked & 'loaded', will occupy nearly half of your available save-file space by itself. It's not only a browser, but an entire second Puppy, sitting inside 4.3.11; runs out at around 1.1 GB.
I think we'll need a conflab. Darren, what's tanker60 likely to have with this kinda set-up? Any ideas? Will he have a /mnt/home, or not?

Ah, what the hell. If it's working.....that's the main thing..!
BTW; that 'freetype' .pet has made a hell of a difference to the way my fonts look in the 'Phoenix'. In the words of the song, 'I can see clearly now.....'

Um....yeah. Me, too. Reading tanker60's last post, I'm still trying to figure out quite what he/she has done....darry19662018 wrote:Just read the above post Mike and I am wondering as well - I only ever run as a manual frugal install.

@ Darren:-
Cheers for the Tixati .pet. I've been hunting high & low to find an older package (the 2.57 package I currently use is no longer the latest, but it won't run in 4.3.11). I'm downloading 'Timecop' with Jean-Claude Van Damme as I type this.....
And following Colonel Panic's observation about Xcalc, and alternate skins, I had a look around for galculator, my favourite calc by a mile. Here's a package from the 'puppy-packages-4' repo at Ibiblio:-

Do we have a screenshot tool that works natively in 4.3.11? I'm currently using an old favourite from my WinXP days under WINE; none of the usual suspects seem to want to work here!
