Suggestions for Forum Improvement

My suggestion is that we kick Sage off the forum it would make it alot more positive. All he ever does is bag good developer's. Seriously the guy has no life he sits on here all day and bags people, he should be banned.

My suggestion kick his butt off!

As sage goes, He's a bit rough to start with but after a bit of time you'll find out he's actually nice guy.

Puppy is made up of just about every type of person and somehow we all generally get along, Some stir us up a bit, but that keeps us on our feet. Straight and to the point without kissing up is always the best direct method of getting useful and productive feedback.

Well i hope he gets better,

I just joined this forum and looking at some of his posts seems a bit harsh, I recently downloaded John Biles Teenpup, and was reading the info behind it, Sage seemed to enjoy putting Biles down, but then again I may be worng, He is propably an american.

Do you mean the post that only said, "Hi everyone I am newbie here." ? My guess is one of the moderators thought it looked suspiciously like spam. Often a spammer will start out by posting short empty one-line messages which say things like "Hi, I'm new here" or "This place looks fun", and nothing else in the post. One reason is that some forums will give the first couple posts of a new user extra scrutiny, so posting seemingly legit messages will boost their post count and possibly bypass that initial scrutiny. Another reason they might do that is because moderators often only look at a post when it is first posted. So the spammer posts a seemingly legit post and waits for the moderators to see and accept it. Then, possibly months later, they'll come back and edit the post to insert spam links. In most forums, editing a post doesn't set up any kind of flags, so the moderators wouldn't know the post had changed unless they continued to monitor all old posts in the forum.

We have had those types of things happen before, so this wasn't just wild suspicion.

By the way, you posted that in the "Misc." section, which is actually for Misc. Puppy topics. The proper place would have been "Truly Off Topic". This isn't a huge deal - it's not like we ban people for posting in the wrong place, especially when it's as easy of a mistake as that one. Just something to keep in mind.

Seoleaders, it was I who deleted your post. Pizzasgood is right; I thought it looked suspicious. But spammers don't hang around to ask about their posts, so now you seem to be a member in good standing.

I completely agree with you and I can understand that there are many spammers and so sir I don't have any problem and sorry for the inconvenience actually I got confused as I am new and don't know the section made for introduction of newbies I didn't found any such heading here.
I am thankful to you that you gave me a clean chit and that I am out of suspicion Thanks for welcoming me sir I promise I will be always in the rules of the forum and gave you no chance of any such suspicion on me.
Just one request that please kindly guide me where ever I go wrong in posting as I am not yet familiar with the headings and the contents.

Could we have subsections under the Bugs section? Under Bugs we could have subsections for 3.01 4.0 4.1alpha. Then under those subsections users could post individual bug reports instead of having these LONG threads that can't be searched easily. Don't know if there is some limit to the number of subsections.

The forum needs a db of some sort to give better presentation overall IMHO
Oh how much easier it would be to select all threads relating to say wifi, or printing or grub, then be able to further filter by pupver or puplet?

Aitch, I tried to do something like that, with the Beginners sticky index. The forum has only the tiny compose window to work in, and that's not WYSIWYG. It quickly grew into a monumental job and I gave up working on it.

I still think it would be a good thing, but it will only happen if it is easy to do and to maintain.

From my experience administering this forum, expecting people to index their own posts is hopeless. Certainly it is for the beginners, and I'd say even the regulars too. For what you suggest to be done right, a librarian would have to read every post and index it, or at least the ones worth reading. And not doing it right would be a waste of everyone's time.

Nice catch, Aitch. You were right; none of his 9 posts contributed anything to the discussion and his WWW link was to a commercial software site, so I deleted him from the membership. He can reregister if it matters to him.

Perhaps this is the most pathetic of suggestions, but given the recently long run with muggins and MU helping me with the OpenCobol compiler, I would like to ask this:

Would it be possible to create a sub-forum that is dedicated to compilers and programming? I don't know if this would be a welcome addition or not. Its just an idea.

We are getting far too many spam/scam postings & are appearing in google searches under those headings due to
'unattended to' postings/memberships

since 7th June I have made I think 10 spam reports

In effect we are under-moderated

googlebot, yahoobot & msnbot to name but a few, are regular visitors and are now adding spam listings to us due to 'unattended to' posts & memberships of spammers/spambots

I regularly report these but unfortunately it is not prioritised, and we will soon be beyond the tipping point for bad reputation
This, IMHO, is serious & needs urgent decisive attention, lest we inadvertently destroy a hard-earned & deserved good reputation
