Re: usb keyboard problem during "init" script

#141 Post by gyro »

Further, and possibly last report on:
peebee wrote:Unable to type the required savefolder number when the list is displayed
In my case the problem appears to be that some usb devices are not fully recognised during "init".
Something has significantly changed in the way puppy recognises usb devices, and I've no idea if it's the kernel or udev or what.

Test:
1) Boot TahrPup 6.0 with 2 savefolders
2) When asked for a number, move usb wireless receiver to different port.
3) Plugin old basic usb keyboard to usb port, and enter number.
4) When system is up, remove basic usb keyboard.
5) Move usb wireless receiver back to original port.

I have attached a text file containing the output from

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep usb
This shows the "hid-generic" keyboard being completely recognised at step 3). Entries in dmesg before that happen in "init", entries after that occur later.
The "logitech-djreceiver" is not fully recognised until after step 3), too late to be used to enter the number.
A full recognition of the "logitech-djreceiver" can be seen at the end when it is moved back to the original usb port in step 5).

Just wondering how many bug fixes and updates provided by Quickpet, before you just release a new updated Tahrpup iso?

Maybe put a warning message in the first post of this topic advising to run Quickpet->Info->Tahrpup bug fixes
To have it fully updated.

Run Quickpet->Info->Update Quickpet also :idea:

Question about proper operation procedures.
In Quickpet->Info
Do you need to run "Update Quickpet" before running "Tahrpup bug fixes"?
Are they completely independent operations?

By the way, Love Quickpet and these two features!!!
hi bigpup,

sorry for the late reply, i'm away at the moment and don't have much internet access.

the tahrpup bugfixes & update quickpet buttons are independent. the 'update quickpet' button just for adding and updating the packages available in quickpet only, such as the drivers.
it may get combined into a single button at some point.

once there's 2-3mb of bugfixes, the plan is to combine them with other bigger fixes (such as updating pburn & rox) and then send them through the 'service pack' mechanism in the PPM. The bugfixes button will then be reset keeping the size down and keeping it quick.

i'll add a better explanation on the first page.

cheers

A little question, do you know how internazionalize quickpet? Normally gettext not works... if I edit the file, after save, when I click 'small version' quickpet disappears.
hi xanad,

i've never looked into how to internationalize something, although it would be good to get quickpet internationalized.
there are two files to edit for the gui, /usr/local/bin/quickpet and /usr/local/quickpet_precise/small/quickpet (the small version)
there's also the update messages ..... /usr/local/quickpet_precise/version & /usr/local/quickpet_precise/tahrfix_version

I like everything about tahrpup 6 except the browser palemoon. IMHO, seamonkey is the best browser for puppy. Scrolling is pathetic in palemoon.
browsers can work differently on different hardware, and are always a bone of contention.... tahrpups browser was always a choice between seamonkey & palemoon, i went with palemoon because it has access to most of firefoxes addons and also because is was performing better than seamonkey on my hardware (scrolling is smoother for me in palemoon) .

the next tahrpup may well have a different browser though, just because i've since found out that palemoon doesn't work on some chipsets.

hi bark_bark_bark,

you'll need to update palemoon manually although updating to palemoon 25+ may cause some addons to stop working.... see here http://addons.palemoon.org/firefox/incompatible/

to update palemoon grab the latest tar.bz2 from here (not the installer!) http://sourceforge.net/projects/pm4linux/files/ unzip and place it in /opt .... you can delete the old one first or just unzip it there to overwrite.

qbittorrent will need compiling, although compiling qt apps in tahrpup is a little complicated and i haven't worked it out yet. this is because 'trusty tahr' which tahrpup grabs most of it's libs from has both qt4 and qt5 and uses a binary called 'qtchooser' which you need to go through when compiling qt-apps, stipulating qt4 or qt5.

in the mean time (until someone works out how to use this) i suggest seeing if it compiles in precise or raring.... the result should work in tahrpup.

hi gcmartin

if you click the 'update quickpet' button in quickpet.... there's now a selection of drivers on the 'driver' tab

1- on quickpet -> graphic -> Mypaint botton do nothing! :(

2- maybe chromium 38 must to be on quickpet!!

3- Dropbox on quickpet?

Good Program! thanks for it

EDIT: sorry, the program that i want was PINTA, no MyPaint.. LOL... and pinta most to be in quickpet! is an awesame software!!
hi luiscuadrado123,

i'll fix the mypaint link (thursday as away at the mo) in the meantime you can install it by pasting this into a terminal

Code: Select all

petget http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr/puppylinux/pet_packages-tahr/mypaint-1.1.0.pet
i'll have a look at the latest chromium

dropbox is a problem on frugal installs, it doesn't remember your login information and you have to go through the setup everyboot. the one that did work is now broken as dropbox is insisting on the latest version. hopefully someone will find a fix soon.

P.S. glad you got your driver working :)

hi luiscuadrado123,

print to cupsPDF is working fine for me, but i do remember on precise it suddenly stopping working (after working for a while)and i couldn't figure out why

you can still use 'print to file' for a pdf.

Here is the first step for trouble-shooting a problem with printing.

1. Do a temporary clean install of Puppy by booting off the CD using the "puppy pfix=ram" boot option.

2. If needed, install your printer driver.

3. Print something. Can you reproduce the problem?

CUPS is designed to work in a true multi-user Linux environment where security is important, so it is sensitive to changes in the Linux ownership/permission system. This can be easily broken in Puppy by installing some extra package like Chrome.

There is a good argument for retiring CUPS-PDF from Puppy.

In the old Linux printing system, a print job left the application as a stream of Postscript data. The CUPS-PDF driver captured the stream, ran the program pstopdf and saved the PDF to your home directory.

But in the new Linux printing system, a print job now leaves the application already converted to PDF format. So CUPS-PDF just converts it into another PDF, often of poorer quality!

That's why Print to File is the preferred tool. Be aware that Print to File is a part of GTK. Non-GTK apps usually have their own "Export to PDF" tool. Or you can save the project in some graphics format and use PeasyPDF to convert it.

Re: CUPS failure:

This can be difficult to fix. See the discussion here.

Also, check the folder /initrd/pup_rw. It should be owned by root and have 755 permissions. It should be readable and executable by everyone, but only writable by root.

It works exactly the same as the old version.

Code: Select all

smbw://PC-name/Printer-name
But smbw adds code for printers that require authentication or have trouble being detected on the network.

Then your printing system is badly messed up. I tried using the scsi backend and got a "bad device" error, exactly what I expected.

[Edit] According to the Bricscad documentation, it has an Export to PDF option.
