xombrero_1.6.4 minimal HOWTO

#1 Post by oui »

main thread concerns Deepin 15.7.AMD64 and includes the adequate deb package working in Deepin 15.7.AMD64!

That minimal HOWTO is probably interesting also in other distros so I publish those details separately here.

The installation of that version is in the most distribution difficult (excepted in Lubuntu minimal, but also the installation of the adequate past release of Lubuntu minimal itself is difficult and Xombrero is part that made it difficult  !)

Installation in Deepin (and analog, hopping all dependencies will be found! In Deepin they are available  !):

-donwload the deb package in /
-invoque dpkg and follow the instructions how to get the dependencies with apt !

After the installation:

-so installed by Deepin, and after adding (extra) a "xombrero.conf"
-where you can add your start page, can also be an html page on your harddisk,
-allow if you want spell check in the first line for spell
-define which hunspell dictionaries have to be used, you can use more than one to check simultaneously in more than one tongue if mixed texts in 2 or 3 languages
-define and easy adapt your favorite searching engine

Xombrero can with the installed first version of webkitgtk offer those named functions (startpage, spell (*1 , search), use tabs, download of course, and over that save divers passwords, as well as the url history restricted within a login session in the concerned webpage

as Deepin saves if you not close, setting down or rebooting, your actual session, returning to Deepin you get your session again and those values preserved!

If you don't want it, you can close xombrero before you shutdown (a DeePup would probably so or so loose that ability).

Although Xombrero has nothing to do with Mozilla as it's base is webkit, it appears in the web as "firefox" and really do about the same but so tiny and so secure (if YOU don't open unsecure ways!)... The compatibility seems to be excellent! The claim from webpage «that is not Firefox!» is rare...

Xombrero, a tabbed browser, offers 2 appearances:

a white window, difficult and not usual for beginners where the commando line is at the bottom being not always apparent (depends of the settings) where you can enter a lot of commands beginning with the sing «:»

as well as a simple but enough subdivided normal browser appearance some kind remembering a Mozilla light! The top url entry field is for url's and searching words. The hidden foot entry field stay operable and appears entering the front «:» of the xombrero commands (see xombrero man page)

If you see only a white page and don't like that, check your ~/.xombrero.conf !

In the separate hidden xombrero subdir .xombrero you will find especially the text file created after you enter your first favorite. You may change manually the content as it is pure text.

Bookmark: use :fav to use them and :favadd to create then

(*1 the declaration of some browser, that it is only possible in webengine and with special dictionaries being to be converted is also nonsens!
