Semi crash on startup Bionic Puppy 32

#1 Post by gazinbali »

Hi All
Arrghh I seem to be plagued with both Windows and Linux problems today.
So for this Puppy problem.. . It started off that my background screen would not load, and I had to open the folder with my pictures and reset the background.. Hmm no biggie I thought.. Then next I get the folder will not open when clicked.. oh well.. I can still use the internet.. press on..Now.. I get all my drive icons stacked on top of each other in the top LH Corner of the Desktop.. I can open ROX but it wont navigate anywhere and I cant close its window .. If i select Kill.. everything goes totally Black.. and i cant do anything.
Also the other Icons for other folders incl Spot are now not on my desktop.
I need to be able to navigate obviously.. Please advise what may be causing this and how to fix.
Thanks
Gary
PS I was able to navigate to the Spot folder when using the Select File to upload.. its a screenshot so you can see what little I have on Desktop.

Issues on windows AND linux - if it's the same machine, perhaps a ram issue?

Hi ozsouth

Thanks for the quick reply.. Yes its the same machine... but the issues with windows are not anything like this.. Some undetectable malware is crashing my win7 .. corrupting the winload.exe file and boot.ini files so it wont boot up.
Fortunately I have copies backed up so I can replace them..using Linux..
if only I could navigate to the c/win sys32 folder.
As a caution though I will see if I can run windows memcheck and I will remove and clean the memory sticks.

Other comments are welcome on this thread.
Thanks
Gary

You can run Puppy from pendrive.

Could your Puppy installation have been infected as well?
If you have frugal install of Puppy on hdd, just overwrite the init, vmlinuz/kernel and system sfs from the .iso.
Maybe the pupsave is corrupted, so try if you can run Puppy properly without it: pfix=ram.

Run some rescue discs to detect viruses/malware.
(There is also one from windows, Defender Offline, that is not too bad.)

First, this could be just a bad boot up.
Totally shutdown and power off the computer.
Keep powered off for a few minutes.

Now do a power on and boot up of Bionicpup32.

Any help?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected
YaPI(any iso installer)

Foxpup.. yes I have a Frugal install.. but I cannot navigate to anywhere,..
If I open ROX i see files and links.. but clicking does nothing.

This could work.. but my system just stats running on auto when it boots,... how do I stop it, and type in pfix=ram.?

Often, to add boot options, you can stop the bootmanager when it shows a screen, but you do not have much time, just seconds.
'e' is often to edit the highlighted entry.

You can look for the configuration file of the bootmanager instead and add a new entry there instead.
If you use grub4dos, the configuration file is menu.lst.
To do this you should start up from pendrive.
Do you have a Puppy on pendrive? Can you boot from this?
CD (for very old computer) is also good.
You may have to go into BIOS to change the boot order.

(This is also how you can run a rescue disc.)
