Vitrualbox puppy as guest OS

#1 Post by WiZard »

Recently tested Portable Virtualbox on a Win7 host and thought the results might help others

host computer - DEll d630 laptop dual core 4gb ram
host Os - win7 pro
Portable Virtualbox 5.1.22

Virtualbox was setup to boot puppy from a .iso file

puppy lucid 5.28 = ok, reasonably fast and usable

puppy 5.71 - boot crashed with "Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt" error

puppy slacko 6.3- boot crashed with "Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt" error

puppy dpup stretch 7.5rc5- boot crashed with "Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt" error

Did the same test on a Lenovo x220 laptop and the results were the same. Tried several "fixes" found on puppy forums and on the internet without success.

Finally found a Youtube video that suggested opening the computer bios, finding the "virtualization" setting and turning it on. This allowed both my laptops to boot the iso images without errors.

I did note that all the versions newer than lucid 5.28 were very slow on the Dell d630 and even on the lenovo x220 which is twice as powerful. Tweaking the settings could probably improve the performance.
