MAN do i ever wish i could get my puppy on the internet...!

I have tried like everything i can think of to configure the differant dialers in puppy but i still can't get it on the internet...

X-ISP

X-ISP get's the furthest of them all , it actually does dial out and connect , but it isn't connected..! , It shows a little terminal window and in that i can see my server identify itself and ask for a login name and password , X-ISP sends the required information and all but the server dosen't accept it and cut's me off... Every single time...

WVDial

Well wvdial just plain won't do a thing...! , It won't even dial my modem correctly half the time..., And the other half it stalls out and quits trying to connect...

Any of the other dialers..

Well what do i need to say..? , They don't cut it either...

Let me ask this.., How are all of you dialup puppy user's getting on the internet...?? I just plain don't get it... :x

I really don't understand why i have all this trouble and you fellow puppy/dialup user's don't....

and, if i remember correctly, you've got an external, "real" modem, so it is odd. i'm using a winmodem, (lucent), and mine works fine. i just tried pup2.13 on neighbour's computer, and pup correctly identified, & installed, ltmodem...but wouldn't connect.

it's a dark art, & we definitely need some sort of trouble-shooting guide on how to narrow down what causes these connection conniptions.

Dial Up Modem

#3 Post by Firefox »

Hi Jason
I`ve found that with downloading WVDial v1.53 and gnome-ppp I can get on the internet fine. I simply download/install them in PSI or Pet format then run the setup modem routine which identifies the port ttyso and then save it.
I` have diamond modem on port com1,ttys0.

Hello jason.b.c,
Dial-Up is the thing I most dislike about Linux. So many Distro's don't even take the time to add any sort of Dial-Up driver in their version of Linux.

O.K I use an internal LT Winmodem that works with Mepis 3.4-3 , Puppy, Linspire and Freespire. (If your getting on the net with Freespire, then Puppy should work. I found that I need to set "GK Dial" to "chap" before it will work.)
My father's Laptop Modem only works with Xandros, where Xandros won't work at all with my Winmodem.

I also have notice that if I don't enter in my internet providers details correctly and leave out just one letter then my modem dials, but drops out before connecting.

I hope you can work it out :!:

Dialer

#6 Post by Firefox »

I`ve looked around and dotpups seem to have disapeared to be replaced by PETS. I used to get the download from PSI - Puppy-Software-Installer but now thats been gutted to only a few.
You can get WVDial 1.53, gnome-ppp-dialer from
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/pupget-packages-1 or -2 in a tar.gz format or PET format. Also /system-Utilities for PSI.
I`ll try looking further but dont know where these pups might be stored.

jason,

gnome-ppp is available here:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... .23.tar.gz

the problem is that to configure gnome-ppp to see your modem, you need wvdial to properly see your modem.

Gkdial is fine in the vast majority of cases.
It could be that your external modem needs a different initialisation string. Gkdial sends "ATZ" which works for most external serial modems, but perhaps not all. Look in /etc/ppp to find the script that has this string.

It may take a while until I finished the domain transfer.
Easiest way to find the old dotpups on the new server:

http://puppyfiles.org/dotpupsde/dotpups/

I also updated the repository list for PSI (Puppy Software Installer).
After you started it, click on "mirrors" to update the list, then restart PSI.

I'm in hurry, more info this evening.

Hi Jason,

I`m running the new puppy 2.14Final and it has the Pet package manager.
The list of installable items is getting bigger including wvdial 1.53 and gnome-ppp .so I assumed all the dotpups were being changed to it. The only problem is you have to be online to get them! unless you`ve stored them locally. It`s really very good as it places icons on the desktop menus and works out any dependancy issues. I can get my modem working in a few minutes. I still cant find the .pup versions so maybe I made a mistake and they were always tar.gz and that resident pet program allowed me to install them.
Have you got the modem working yet?

Well i guess that's the end of that...! , I can't even get as far as installing kppp.pup ..!

It complains about not having enough free disk space..? , Wich i can't see how because puppy is on a 1.5 GB space...

And how big is kppp..? , like 4 mb's or something..?

I just don't know anymore , Would someone send me a new puppy disk ( 2.14 ) with all the dialers in it as well as the cups.pup printer drivers installed in it..? That's the other thing i can't seem to work out...

Hi jason.b.c; If the SAVE file is full you'll get exactly the error you said.

Check it out by right clicking the SAVE file's mount point & click "Disk Usage".
Reported free space needs to be at least 5 times larger than the app. file.
The app. file's compressed, so when it's installed it expands more than 2 times.

Give it a good & let us know!!!

Any way to test ISP to see what it is looking for?

#20 Post by purple_ghost »

I also have had problems with Gkdial. Gkdial worked perfectly for months. I suspect my ISP, installed a security update from M$ for their servers. I would love to be able to prove the Windows server does this deliberately.

Sorry I do not mean to hi Jack this other guys post. My question line is the same. What can those of us do to look for errors while we try to log in? Or as my topic asked. How can I test to see what the ISP is looking for?

Kppp logs in for me. I am now using Muppy.

Edit:

ATZ
OK
ATM1L1
OK
ATDT9240603
CONNECT 45333/ARQ

The numbers after connect seem to change. The only change I made to the specifications to the version of Kppp on Muppy 007 is to reduce the connection speed to something like the speed of my External Serial modem. If Kppp tries to log in at the default speed, which is twice the speed of the modem. Then Kppp changes and sets the speed to the slowest possible.

I think the error you see with the "Not enough free disk space" probably relates to having a corrupted copy of Kppp. Or perhaps you tried to use a Puppy manager which has a dead link.

I have downloaded Kppp as a stand alone download from Mu's earlier site, dotpups.de , for which a mirror will soon be working.

However. In following Mu's formula. I would need (at least) to download and install libqt. libqt is not listed as a separate download because it comes with several other programs. So for me to get it. Which programs will also download libqt?
