How to improve Audacity record quality?

#1 Post by M.Gregg »

Teenpup <<for fun

Audacity record quality is poor. I had this on fedora and needed to select either oss or alsa to get the quality. Is it possible to install drivers or am I missing the obvious?

In the past I regularly recorded with Audacity under Puppy and sometimes with Cool Edit under Windows (XP or 98). I never notice any difference in the record quality.
Check that you do have the input you 'think' you are using activated. I remember that when I first used Audacity under Puppy I had some difficulty getting ALL the various controls set correctly in both the Puppy mixer and Audacity. Even when an input is muted (somewhere) you may still get a signal albeit at a low level and somewhat distorted.
Good luck

Audacity in teenpup

#3 Post by M.Gregg »

I have full volume, however the recording sounds like tin foil in front of a speaker!
I had this same thing in fedora and had to select oss in preferences. only /dev/dsp is available!I can turn the record level up untill it clips!

I think I may need alsa or oss to be recognised in audacity.

This is teenpup on 8gb stick.

Thank you for any help.

Teenpup Audacity

Hello all o.k. solved it!

This is what I did:

Downloaded audacity .pup from http://dotpups.de/dotpups/
Installed it over write files when prompted.
In edit preferences select record alsa default / playback alsa default
go to mixer set output pcm to below halfway.
on mixer set the record light to volume by clicking on the red button.
It recorded fine!

Because I am using an 8Gb stick the temp file in audacity filled up so i copied the file to the desk to so I could empty it when needed!

Teenpup audacity

For anyone having the same problem!

Just for info remember you now have audacity twice on your system the old one and the new! The new one appears in the icewm menu under dotpups.

The short cut on the desk top is the old one!
You can remove the old program and install the new with short cut on the desktop if you find it confusing!

Thanks for your help Geoff.
