4.3 Final available

#1 Post by Lobster »

Make sure you read the readme-files.html
this will give details of the 3 different kernels - I am using the latest
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... puppy-4.3/

Expect an announcement on Barrys Blog
http://www.puppylinux.com/blog/

Upgrading from an earlier puppy. If you have a "pup_save" file and you want to upgrade it, it has to be renamed. Say that you are booting from live-CD and you have 'pup_save-john.2fs' on the hard drive (or whatever) -- make a copy of it (to be on the safe side!) named 'pupsave.2fs', then boot or reboot Puppy 4.3. That's it, pup 4.3 only recognises save files of name 'pupsave*.2fs' (where '*' means wildcard).

Puppy 4.3 built with older kernel. The official 4.3 has the latest kernel, 2.6.30.5, however some old PCs work better with older kernels (though fortunately the large majority are happy with the latest kernel!). Puppy-enthusiast-developers will be building 4.3 with older kernels, such as 2.6.25.16 that is used in 4.2x and earlier. Please check the forum for announcements.

Puppy 4.3 and SCSI drives. There is a special build of 4.3 that not only recognises true-SCSI drives but also boots from them. Note, SCSI drives were commonly used in server PCs 10 or more years ago. Again, please check the forum for announcements.

Fast...fast Internode Oz mirror.
90 seconds for me.

The reuploaded 4.3 ISO may need renaming back
to ISO at the end.

Mine is now "pup-430.iso"

pup-430.isoTEMP 18-Sep-2009 22:04 105M

Yes this was an 'early announcement'
because some people were already downloading before Barrys
official announcement

It also seems he will be recompiling
and uploading again

I have another major bug to trace too
so for those on slow downloads or limited time - give it a few days.

Yes, I'm going to re-upload 'pup-430.iso' tonight.

That was a curved ball, most unexpected. See my blog post:

http://puppylinux.com/blog/?viewDetailed=01097

But, if you already have pup-430.iso, no problem, just delete the '537' modules in /lib/modules/2.6.30.5/intelmodem

It does not affect pup-430-small.iso, as that does not have the big modem drivers.

The 430-small makes a lovely system if you dont need those drivers. Posting from it now. Very fast, nice font display, great theme. No problems with Alsa or Gxine. Great job thanks.

Who is behind @PUPPY_LINUX?

Why haven't they made an announcement? It's #FollowFriday.

Yes, the 105 mb is the corrected ISO, as some drivers proved to be problematic (and removed) just after the 110 mb ISO was announced.

About puppy-430JP(pup-4.3JPbeta)

#18 Post by YoN »

About pup-4.3JPbeta

There is also a difference of the kernel version. Please test another one when trouble is found in the latest kernel.

Download
430JPbeta ISO (118MB, kernel 2.6.30.5):
http://openlab.jp/puppylinux/download/4 ... JPbeta.iso
md5sum:
http://openlab.jp/puppylinux/download/4 ... so.md5.txt

430stdJPbeta ISO (117MB, kernel 2.6.25.16):
http://openlab.jp/puppylinux/download/4 ... JPbeta.iso
md5sum:
http://openlab.jp/puppylinux/download/4 ... so.md5.txt

430retroJPbeta ISO (115MB, kernel 2.6.21.7):
http://openlab.jp/puppylinux/download/4 ... JPbeta.iso
md5sum:
http://openlab.jp/puppylinux/download/4 ... so.md5.txt

Operation with mounting RAM256MB or less:
This ISO file is 118MB, smaller than alpha, but still large (For Japanese localization like the dictionary etc.). Though Puppy run when trying by mounting RAM256MB, but when looking Youtube etc, Seamonkey drops.
Please shutdown once and make the personal storage file when starting with live CD at the time of mounting RAM256MB or less. I think that operation will be more stability when you use over 128MB personal storage file.
Shift from alpha version

Shifting from 4.30JPalpha
left pupsave as it is, and just replacepup-430JPalpha.sfs with pup-430JPbeta.sfs. If you have problem, please boot with "pfix=ram" and confirm. When there is a description fixed to alpha with menu.lst,
replace

Code: Select all

find --set-root --ignore-floppies /pup430/pup-430JPalpha.sfs
to

Code: Select all

find --set-root --ignore-floppies /pup430/initrd.gz
Changes from 4.30JPalpha to 4.30JPbeta
1. Update of HELP
As for the highlight, past FreeBasic deleted and scoop a new language Genie in "HOW TO Programming for Puppy".

2. Update of Applications
1. For zpxxx.sfs of universal installer
2. Grub4Dos v1.1 - When installing Puppy in USB thumb drive etc., it is possible to make to the menu only in the USB memory.
3. acpid -4 - There was strange operation of shutting down when beginning this time because it suspended to shutdown so far and to close the lid there. The power supply cuts automatically sooner or later if the lid is closed and left after the shutdown by this correction.
4. winfont-3.3 - Fixed though the font of Win 9x/Me was not able to be used as the one with the case where the virtual memory doesn't become effective.
5. e3,MP - Both for Japanese (Depend on Shintani information).

3. Additional application programs
Added /usr/bin/xev. Deleted Pcdripper. Revives Ycalc into menu. Additionally, it is possible to execute other applis from the command prompt or gexec even in case of not being in the menu.

4. For key code of Xorg/Xvesa
Prepared /root/.Xmodmap.xorg and Xmodmap.xvesa.
In any case, the Kanji(Chinese) character key and the Windows key (menu display) are sure to work.

5. Reduction of excessive images
/usr/share/inkspace/about.svg image(200kB!) etc. Over 10kB images are reduced or has been compressed.

6. The wallpaper is the one by jebaJQ8.

From Shinobar's Announcement.
