PCMCIA recognized, but no power / lamp is OFF

#1 Post by d018398 »

Hi,

when I try to set-up a network using the wizard on puppy 4.3, my T-Sinus 111 pcmcia wlan card is appartenly recognized, since it shows in the wizzart as follows:

wlan0 wrireless hostap_cs pcmcia:

Unfortunately, I don't get any further from here. The lamps on the pcmcia wlan card remain dark, so apparently, it is not really active.

When trying to scan the WLAN, I get this error message:
Failed to raise interface wlan0.
Failed command was: ifconfig wlan0up.
Error returned was: ifconfig: SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address.

I attach the hardinfo report here, in case you like to see what is activated / running in regards to PCMCIA on my machine.

Thanks for any advice.
Best regards,
JR

Additional Information:

I ran some commands - see here the results:

# pccardctl status
Socket 0:
5.0V 16-bit PC Card
Subdevice 0 (function 0) bound to driver "hostap_cs"

# pccardctl ident
Socket 0:
product info: "T-Sinus", "111card", "", "2.0.0"
manfid: 0x01bf, 0x3301
function: 6 (network)

...does this give some hints, to why the lamp on the pcmcia card is not active?

I don't have an answer for you, but thought I'd confirm the driver you're using is the right one. A Google search shows your card has a Prism2 chipset. (There's a USB device with the exact same name, but it has a Prism3 chipset.) So, the hostap_cs driver that is automatically loaded on your laptop is the correct driver.

Here's a summary of the information that will be of interest to anyone wanting to help.
Puppy 4.3
device= T-Sinus 111 pcmcia
device chipset= Prism2
driver used= hostap_cs, provided by Puppy

The other piece of information that may be helpful is the make and model of your laptop.

The lights on a PCMCIA or USB card are unreliable indicators of what is actually going on. In my experience, PCMCIA cards don't completely light up until a network is selected in the wizard after the network scan.

It seems you're comfortable with the connection wizard, but if you are not, you may want to check out this video tutorial : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICGJIa0o1mA

Something else to consider - my ancient Sony Vaio laptop seems to hold some settings in memory after it's been shut down. I occasionally have the exact same wireless problems as you have described. In such cases, the only way to resolve the problem is to shut the laptop down and disconnect the power cord and battery before reconnecting everything and rebooting.

THanks for the tips. Unfortunately no success.

My laptop is a Sharp Mebius MURAMASA PC-MV1-C1E.

I can work fine with LAN ethernet. I may simply purchase supported hardware (usb) for wlan in combination with Puppy and use my old t-sinsus pcmcia on another computer.
