GRUB's "unknown" Linux distribution

#1 Post by oxygenfarm »

The new Puppy 5.25 looked so good that I added it to my laptop, along with W7 and Ubuntu (many thanks to the developers!).
When the computer starts and wants to load a system, GRUB offers identity for the first two but calls Puppy "unidentified" and I can't find a way to edit that situation.
Puppy deserves to be called by his right name.

I guess that you did full install.

I guess that you are using grub2.

If that is correct, you need to edit /boot/grub/grub.conf

If that is wrong, and you are using grub 1.

You need to edit /boot/menu.lst

In Puppy I could not open grub.conf, but did in Ubuntu.....but the header warns "DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE".
There must be some way.

This text tells me that most likely you have grub2 in Ubuntu.
did in Ubuntu.....but the header warns "DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE".
There are a few threads that do explain how you should act to get puppy working with Ubuntu as the dualboot OS. You only have to see to that Ubuntu don't over write that entry you do.

So use this search engine
http://www.wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html

grub 2 puppy dual boot

in the search

I found this one
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=45961
Has anyone dual booted Puppy + Ubuntu with GRUB2?
Only 121 posts to read through :) But most likely you get the answer earlier than that.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though
