Here's a "cde-package" for gtk-youtube-viewer 3.7.4
Should run on all 32-bit Linux systems, so on all Puppies too, old or new.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/e5h ... ar.gz?dl=1
See for usage info in 'ReadMe-youtube-viewer_youtube-dl.cde', after extracting.

Also updated the .pet package for v3.7.4 (added missing icons), see:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 72#1052372

Yes, try mpv, I can't make it work with vlc too, here's a mpv pet that should work on tahr:
.........

Btw, did vlc earlier work for you ?

Fred
Thanks kindly Fred, that worked!

Sorry, Fred, I don't remember if VLC worked with GYV before.

That one works well, too, Fred. Though the Puppy desktop Menu items for the viewer and updater are no longer there.

I opened GYV from the terminal.

try the Russian online viewer / download! for it use the youtube... address but write without espace

ss

before that!

Example:

https://ssyoutube.com/watch?v=KxWLd8bOg4I

(if you do that with this url, a 680 MB download begins, over 1 hour 45 min. best German music where you can see our daughter in action at one of her two world-famous workplaces as her orchestra plays as well at the Elbphilarmonie as at the Opera. Conductor was Nagano, the actual Music artistic director of the town. If you don't have 680 MB free in your RAM, select a target directory on your HD or renounce!)

top picture:

the site savefrom opens and you see at the first part where the red point is. Hit on the "download" key. The second bottom part opens (as well as at the same time an advertising new page, sorry close it immediately! If you download more, it will continue 3..6 time to do that, but continue without more advertising after that!) . Hit on the second "download" you are seeing now and your download begins really!

bottom picture:

You find (the begin of) your download in the directory for example "/file" (here in Quirky64bit, probably the more smaller 64 bit system with such performances  . You see, top picture, the browser is a very old version of Seamonkey 2.32. It continues to work best for me!).

You can immediately start the beginning record hitting on the new icon and begin to look the target.

this site permit to download extremely big y! files!

I am currently using it with ToOpPy (based on Puppy Precise)! So should work on older Puppies...

[EDIT 1]: Updated to 3.7.4-2, see the message above.

[EDIT 2]: Some "translatable" chains inside the *.glade file introduce problem if... translated! The "Search for videos" function doesn't work properly > "Something went wrong". The words anytime, days, weeks, months, years must stay as they are, in English (that said, for potential translators). I already noticed this strange behavior in the previous 3.5.0 version but it has not been corrected by the creator of GTK YouTube Viewer (don't know if it is the same in the 64 bit version?) and I forgot it.
So, I reloaded the 3.7.4-2 PET and SFS with the corrected French *.glade file.
Sorry!

Cordialement.

Has anyone had any luck logging into your youtube accounts?

The "click here to get the authentication code" button doesn't do anything, so I went to google and requested the OAuth authentication code and put it into the box, but it doesn't do anything for me.

Is it broken or am I missing something?

Dan

(Using Debian Dog Stretch Open box version).

This is probably due to the fact that access to the internet via a web browser is not functional, at least in the 32 bit version...
Maybe you can fill manually data inside the file gtk-youtube-viewer/cde-root/root/.config/youtube-viewer/api.json?

Cordialement.

Thanks, that got me on the right track.

You have to sign up for both an api key and the Oauth authentication, put the values in the .json file, then apparently wait a while for it to propagate, THEN press the button in my screenshot and authorize the application.

I opened it via terminal with "gtk-youtube-viewer -debug" when it worked, but I don't know if that made a difference.

See https://github.com/trizen/youtube-viewer about 2/3's the way down the page and the 2 linked help desk calls for more detailed instructions.

Thanks,

Dan

gtk-youtube-viewer 3.7.4-2 SFS 3.7.4 PET Precise 571-light

#453 Post by sindi »

The SFS works perfectly, GUI version. I did not check the PET as GUI.

I run yt-viewer from a terminal instead of the GUI,
by typing the following two lines (or making a script yt4)

For the SFS:
cd /usr/local/gtk-youtube-viewer
/youtube-viewer.cde --res=480p

For the PET cd to where you unpacked it instead

It works despite two error messages:
[!]Invalid client_id:
[!]Invalid client_secret:

Many thanks to everyone who worked on this. I had been watching
videos on a 4" screen for months now (Newpipe Legacy - which does
not let you specify video length or date).

That has to do with the same as dancytron mentioned above:
See https://github.com/trizen/youtube-viewer about 2/3's the way down the page and the 2 linked help desk calls for more detailed instructions.
For to login you need to edit /usr/local/gtk-youtube-viewer/cde-root/root/.config/youtube-viewer/api.json by adding the client_id and client_secret keys.
EDIT: Not sure if login works with this cde-package setup, didn't test.

straw-viewer

#455 Post by sindi »

Thanks for the link. I see that the youtube-viewer straw-viewer does not require any keys.
Has anyone packaged it for puppy linux? Slackware has it. I don't need it.

How to turn off captions?

#456 Post by sindi »

What file do I edit to turn off captions in youtube-viewer?
The latest PET works perfectly in Tahr 6.05 on a 2003 Thinkpad T41.
(Wifi works with Network Wizard only).

quirky-142-BABY works with youtube-viewer on 2006 HP dv5000

#457 Post by sindi »

No additional libraries or other files are needed to view videos with the 87MB-download BABY quirky 1.42 with kernel 2.6.32.28 from 2011 (older kernel than Precise 5.7.1 light or Tahr 6.05 noPAE).

More libraries are needed for recent browsers (Pale Moon 28.9.1 or Firefox68 ESR).

93% CPU is used at 480p resolution (which often displays at 720p) and the audio is out of sync sometimes.

youtube-viewer.conf to eliminate captions

#458 Post by sindi »

To eliminate captions, change 1 to 0 in youtube-viewer.conf.

I unpackaged the PET with tar -zxvf and found the config file at:
/mnt/home/yt-viewer.....pkg/cde-root/root/.config/youtube-viewer.conf
and gtk-youtube-viewer.conf

Sometimes when using the command-line version I can no longer see anything I am typing until I exit and start the viewer again.

gtk-youtube-viewer 3.7.4-2

#459 Post by PipzDex »

fredx181 wrote:Hi sindi,

EDIT: I've read previous posts better now after posting the below, I'm not sure what exactly you're using and what could cause the problems, sorry if below is useless info...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's no youtube-viewer .pet for Precise (perl version in precise is too old), but there is for Tahr, see here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 59#1009159
(note that the pet package name is 3.5.3 but in reality it's gtk-youtube-viewer v3.5.0)
EDIT: see also older version and info: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 18#1007818

If you're depending on a cde-package try (if you don't have that version already):
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/sxo ... ar.gz?dl=1
Shared here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 85#1008585
It proved to be the best working cde-package (after some failed attempts, see earlier pages)
Extracts to folder: yt-viewer-3.5.0_youtube-dl
Updating youtube-dl from version 2018.10.29 to latest works for me:

Code: Select all

root@live:/mnt/sda5/yt-viewer-3.5.0_youtube-dl# ./youtube-dl.cde --version
2018.10.29
root@live:/mnt/sda5/yt-viewer-3.5.0_youtube-dl# ./youtube-dl.cde -U
Updating to version 2020.01.24 ...
Updated youtube-dl. Restart youtube-dl to use the new version.
root@live:/mnt/sda5/yt-viewer-3.5.0_youtube-dl# ./youtube-dl.cde --version
2020.01.24
Or try the .pet or .sfs based on it from Argolance, see http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 65#1010065 (cde-package, as .pet or .sfs)

EDIT:
How do I update the youtube-dl in (gtk)-youtube-viewer?
The old one from two weeks ago cannot find URLs.

I tried to update it with ...... youtube-dl -U and it said it updated but I still have the same version of youtube-dl.
(Ran youtube-dl from cde-root with cde-exec).
Download with curl and make executable:

Code: Select all

curl -L https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -o youtube-dl
chmod a+rx youtube-dl
and manually replace in cde-root/usr/local/bin

It appears that you are running Precise 5.71 which is a 32 bit OS. The link is empty for all in 32 bit I believe. There is a post or two in this thread discussing how to authenticate for login.

This appears to just a few posts above this one.
