How do I update my Puppy?

#1 Post by superbob »

Hi
This is probably a very silly question.
I have Lucid 5.2.8.
Can I update it to something newer? To something with a more recent kernel?
Like one does on Ubuntu?

Thanks

Hi, superbob.

Short answer is: one mini-version at a time within the same Puppy "breed".

For example, if I'm running lupu 5.25, I can update to lupu 5.28 simply by inserting a CD with lupu 5.28 on it. The new Puppy will recognize my pupsave, do the update of the newer programs, will even provide a list on screen. It'll take a couple of minutes and then it should boot in lupu 5.28.

(If you do this, make sure to back up your pupsave first.)

It's a no-no however from lupu to slacko. There are too many differences (should I say micro-differences) between the builds of a same program in lucid and slackware, which are the "parents" of those Puppy "breeds". It's probably theoretically possible, but it would take forever.

My $0.02. BFN.

@musher0

Would it be possible to move from Lucid 5.2.8 to Precise 5.4 ?

Only by doing a complete new install of Precise 5.4 and staring over using it.
The two are too different.

In Puppy, when the name changes, it is a completely different version.
Different named versions are not compatible with each other. A lot of under the hood changes.
Good thing is a lot of the program pet packages are usable on different named versions of Puppy.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I'm currently running Slacko 5.3.3 with a frugal install on my laptop. If I wanted to test out the latest Slacko 5.4 beta (or the official one when it's released) what do I actually have to do in order to use my current Slacko savefile with the newer version? (Obviously I'll back it up first in case anything goes wrong).
Thanks for any help.

Do a frugal install of Slacko 5.4 beta.
Place a copy of the old save file into location of Slacko 5.4 beta install.
Boot Slacko 5.4

Here is manual way to do it.
Example:

(Names used are for example only)

Upgrade Puppy 5.0 to Puppy 5.2.5
Download the Puppy 5.2.5.iso file
In Rox-filer (file manager)
Make a new directory like /Puppy525
Left click on Puppy 5.2.5.iso file to open it.
Copy these 3 files to /Puppy525 directory.
initrd.gz
puppy_525.sfs
vmlinuz
Copy the Puppy 5.0 Puppysave.Xfs file (Your old save file) and place in the /Puppy525 directory.
There are now 4 files in the new /Puppy525 directory.
Run the boot loader configuration program for the boot loader you are using to make a boot option for the new Puppy 5.2.5
Reboot.
At boot menu select your upgraded Puppy.

When Puppy 5.2.5 boots it will use and update the save file and programs.
When Puppy 5.2.5 seems to be working OK you can delete Puppy 5.0.
