I have been working with the current precise 5.7.1 and find the isos
are too big. Would like a cut down version of this one, but no go. I
did find a cut down version of 5.4.3 but am unable to download it
because of some error in part. Anyone got an iso of this I could have?

115 MB doesn`t seem very bare bones, it must still have a number of apps in it.

I have "racy-5.3-BABYbarebones.iso" that`s 68 MB, I don`t know where I got it...
