After burning the CD iso , should I be able to just boot from the cd and run puppy from the cd. Is there something Im missing ? Yes, but at the prompt with all the options, you don't need to do anything there, either--at least in most cases. Just let it load, or hit enter. Some older systems (at le...

Well I've spent weeks building Bibletime and GnomeSword for my next release of Living Water, Which should be out within a week or two, I did have plans on releasing it sooner but Its like everything else, It just takes time to do it right. Until then you might want to read up about it. http://www.m...

Re: Going from Xubuntu to puppy
Hello all , .....I have had Xubuntu on my older gateway computer ( 128 mb RAM ), for a few weeks now and I like how it performs better than windows xp that came with the computer. However I am looking to find an OS that is even smaller hoping that it will improve speed and performance even more on ...

. . .in my short time using Puppy, and reading these forums, that there seems to be an inordinate number of people my age (43) and older using Puppy.... people who are so technically savvy that they could use anything they want. Does Puppy really appeal to older technophiles as well as technophobes...

JonGI, Please clarify for us noobs. You d'loaded a tarball? Then you extracted it to /mnt/home? The scripts you clicked in there in rox were there, or did you have to write them? That's why I said my way was dumb.... It doesn't do anything for you. You have to set it all up yourself, and figure it ...

Re: Yahoo Mail
That being said their huge concern is SSL so we reached a comprimise I guess. They can detect immediately when mail is sent W/0 SSL and send out nasty mail to the sender, but either do not care or cannot detect on receive so I am receiving in linux, not sending and I am half happy about the e-mail ...

Yes, on one machine I used a .pet package, on the other I use a .sfs package. Man, I must have chosen like the dumbest way possible to run OOo. I downloaded the beta of 3 from openoffice.org's web site, unpacked it to the top level of my hard drive (outside the puppy save file), and simply open tha...

OKAY! So, it seems I'm definitely stepping out on a limb with my issue. ;-) So, a followup question that is probably a bit more in line with what people are familiar with. ;-) I'm thinking that maybe if I use one of the KDE sfs files, it might work. However, I need this under Dingo. Is the latest 3....

attempt at sfs w/KDE & Bibletime -- odd crash
I'm using Puppy 4, and creating a sfs file to load at startup. I decided against stuffing the KDE and Bibletime libraries into the normal puppy file, both to save space in my save file, and to help trace "issues". However, I almost wonder if this isn't causing my issues. :-) Actually, I wa...

Interesting discussion. My dad was in his 50s when my younger brother bought his first computer--a spankin' new VIC20. Needless to say, my dad never touched that computer, nor any computer until he bought a Mac LC II for my mom. They loved that Mac, and used it for years, until they moved overseas, ...

Re: several questions for puppy linux dingo
hello 1. how do i install the latest version of the browser firefox? Well, I just went to Firefox's web page, downloaded the US English version for Linux (downloaded the latest RC1 of Firefox 3), expanded the file into my /usr/local folder, and did a symlink to the binary into my /usr/local/bin or ...

This is completely separate from what Puppy does with the pup_save.2fs file on a Flash drive. In that case, the data is being stored in a ramdisk, which is a portion of ram that is pretending to be normal harddrive (I suppose it's the dual of swap). So running sync would force all data that has yet...

Re: backup pf data
When puppy boots up from a CD there is a five second pause. To back-up my pup save files I use the command 'puppy pfix=ram' at this point and this starts puppy without looking for or loading any pup save files. Then I mount a USB memory stick or (external/ internal) hard drive and copy my pupsave f...

Is there another way to save these files without shutting down? Ummm - why do you shut down? Oh - to make sure it still works. I save backups BEFORE I do something that might mess up my save file, not after. Well, yes, that's my question... How does one make a backup before making changes? Is it po...

I am slowly coming to the conclusion, btw, that a frugal is better than full install. For ease of back ups and portability? Yes. For running on lower end, RAM-challenged machines? Not necessarily so. It's funny, but I bought this ancient Dell laptop (PII 366mhz 160meg ram) just to run Puppy one. :-...

But it sounds like you need to learn to backup your save file. Make a copy of it whenever you upgrade, or do anything else that you suspect might mess it up, and then you can either go back to the old save file, or extract things from it that you need. Yeah, I think I learned _that_ lesson. :-) In ...

Frugal vs full install
I've got a full install of Puppy 3 on my hard drive, and want to upgrade to Puppy 4. Right now, I've got a frugal install of 4 on the same hard drive (together with a weird Ubuntu mess on a separate partition) using Ubuntu's GRUB to chose between everything. However, I had installed a bunch of softw...
