To install large progams inside a limited size pup_save.2fs virtual partition, the most efficient method is to download all of the files that the large program consists of each individually zipped up. This file is then extracted and the zip file deleted *when the next file is downloading*. Then this...

"Just Works" Configuration of Ethernet at bootup

Puppy is great at detecting hardware and "Just Working", but for one subtle point. An ethernet internet connection via dhcp (by far the most common type) is not auto-detected and configured. With Ubuntu and Windows it is. Would there be any reason for this? I understand BarryK uses some ki...

The problem is...it doesnt need a fix, it needs to be right straight from the CD. Not recovering from a power failure is a major bug, BarryK should be notified.

A great idea for a script! Full firefox is a often requested feature from the people I know who use standard puppy. While Seamonkey is great (and small) for occaisional browsing, perminant installs need a full firefox. Another app you may consider writing an installer for is openoffice. Both of thes...

Hi thanks for posting this. Just what is needed! It seems very basic and simple (like most of my clients!). Also very small and light (unlike many!). Only one problem, I cannot seem to drag mp3/wma files to the main playlist window. I do get a black line "insertion point", however the file...

Trio, a great piece of investigation! This is one of the major problems I find with your average computer users who want it to "just work". Are you aware of any issues changing this string causes with other applications/websites? I will assign a "tester" to try this out.

I know this is a big issue (even though the silience is deafening on this topic!). For those of you who are looking to get it working you need this link http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/firefox-3.5.6.pet This is a installer file that wolfpup has made, taken from this thread . Just click on it and selec...

4.3.1 - Facebook Chat not working in Seamonkey 1.8

Facebook is something like the second most visited site on the internet, although not an "application for everyday use" in the strictest sense of the word, puppy should support all of its features for this reason alone.

Seamonkey 2.0 (just out of Beta) and firefox support facebook chat.

Puppy 4.3.1 - Partview missing from file menu

Just a note, partview is missing from the filesystem menu in 4.3.1. Running partview from the command line does bring it up, but it has no nice pie-chart formatting, and also issues several warnings. Since space is such a critical feature in all puppies, this program is much needed!

dgcom, thank you :D Im afraid Im still stuck though. Looking at the /etc/X11 irectory, I see all kinds of xorg.conf.xxxxxx files. I tried your file for 4.31, using the comment for the end of the file for the name (so it became "xorg.conf.VGABIOS_Cirrus_extension"). Im assuming puppy picks ...

Fantastic initiative there Sylvander, this is just the type of place puppy needs to be promoted. I can understand that people feel comfortable on these forums and wish to just stay there. It would be gold dust for Puppy if you would relay the feedback about puppy back into the development processes ...

Yes, it is still an issue! Would you have a working xorg.conf file hanging around you would post. The keyboard shortcut technique you posted doesnt seem to cut it any more on my setup, same versions as yours. Thanks for posting your experiences.

Sylvander, how did you implement the startup folder in boxpup? I really need to base it on 4.12-barebones because I need the whole thing to netboot into 256mb. I think it will just about do it if I use 412 cutdown.

I didint realise that 4.3.1 had a Startup folder as well! Great stuff. Maybe I can do a stripped barebones version of 4.3.1 (I have to net/PXE boot into 256mb of RAM). Cheers for the info.

Run an Application at Startup

This may seem really basic, but how is this done in puppies 4.12 and 4.3.x? I cant seem to find documentation anywhere. Puppy 4.2.1 had a superb folder where scripts inside were run at startup, its a shame this hasnt been continued. I want to run gcompris in puppy4.12-barebones just after xwindows i...

For the filemanager I would choose XFE (theres a pet somewhere). I agree about facebook being the primary chat platform.
