Re: Installing to HD
So given my being scared and seeking an alternative to installation is it possible to install to USB storage device and if so how? It is possible to install to a USB flash drive. I have done it with Puppy 4.00. After you put a FAT formatted USB device in a USB port, you have to mount it ...

menu.lst
I found installing Puppy 4.00 to a bare hard drive was easy. Editing the menu.lst file get Puppy to boot to the hard drive was the hard part. Menu.lst is in the /boot/grub directory. My menu.lst is below, to use as an example. My hard drive has two partitions (hda1 and hda2) plus a swap partition ...

Cannot edit PuppyDialer settings
I downloaded Puppy 4.00 a couple of weeks ago and like it a lot so far. But I think something is wrong with PuppyDialer. I can't edit my user name, password, and modem speed. Left clicking in the blanks would not bring up a cursor. I worked around the problem by entering the necessary information in ...

Puppy's default is to do everything as root. But if you do not want to be root all the time, you can set up a user account, too. There was a long thread recently on the dangers and benefits of being root. So I will just point you to that thread. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29358 ...

I like running as root in a full install (Puppy 4.00) on a single user box. I'm all for man over machine. So when surfing the net, I'd just as soon put limits on other machines touching mine and doing something I don't want. That's when I don't want to be root. See spot/README.TXT in puppy's home ...

Same problem, later computer. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=16950 This URL has a downloadable image of a 1.44 MB boot floppy. This will start Puppy from a nonbootable USB pen drive, which has Puppy already installed. From there, you ought to be able to install to a hard drive. It ...

I'm a Puppy newbie, and I want to get rid of the windows OS on a desktop box, too. Here's a how-to file that may help both of us.

I've got a Memorex traveldrive 1 GB mini pen drive that is U3. I tried to install Puppy 4.0 on it a couple of days ago to use on an old Pentium II. The OS installed, but the boot floppy could not find it on the pen drive. I think it was looking in the wrong place, in the U3 partition. I wound up ...
