If you want it reused then you can zero all the storage locations with the dd command. dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdx where x is the drive identity.
NB This will take a long time since you are writing to every location.

I can't boot from a USB 3 device. My hardware is around 15 yrs old, and pre-dates USB 3.0 by a long margin.
