You had in 3.17.0 .config:

If you still have that row in config, try to enable it:

I just tested Shinobar`s packaged tahr puppy iso with 3.14.11 kernel. Several things are splendid in it. - intel/nvidia 710M dual graphics works great. No need to remove nouveau.ko kernel module. I think that updating firmwareless 3.5.2.10 causes problem so...safest bet is to put firmware where Puppy`s firmware translocation system is not needed...ie /lib/firmware.
