I am a newbie too. I just got start about a week ago. It is your best bet to get an External modem such as Zoom, USR, Multitech, etc. This cost next to nothing (free to $5) and much faster than winmodem. It took me about 5 minutes to setup my Multitech up. Also, puppy os 1.0.8r work better than 1.0....
