@starhawk
We're probably off-topic here, but that was a thoughtful expression of your opinion and experience. Even amongst my mob (baptists) we range from square to groovy, so we understand that we can get it wrong, and just try to stick to the bible. If you're interested, and reading isn't your strong suit, ...

rc.shutdown
When I remaster, i always edit rc.shutdown & change all instances of 60 sec to 6 sec. Gives a short opportunity to save, then shuts down (unless a save file already exists).

Browsers
Ah - I added Seamonkey & removed Midori (and some other built-ins to trim the iso size) - that's why 'bareview' is an issue for me & not others.

bareview
Bareview has the problem (line 26 should be fi). I ran this both off usb & full install. I installed seamonkey 2.2 directly, rather than via the browser selector. Perhaps /usr/local/bin/bareview is called in that situation. Try running bareview - it will error out, & if cups_shell relies on ...

Lucid 525 & 528: final fi missing from bareview
Couldn't see this elsewhere - printer wizard didn't run (in Lucid 528 & 525). Running cups_shell in a terminal shows error at line 26 in 'bareview'. Adding 'fi' at the end of /usr/local/bin/bareview fixed it.

Streaming
I installed Seamonkey 2.2, and mp3 from your site is fine. SM2.0 series has fewer capabilities. SM2.2 also identifies itself to sites as Firefox 4 (no need to mess around with user agents).

Laptop Brightness
Hopefully this package will help - I use it on a Compaq (needs xorg running):
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... ht-1.1.pet
Once installed, from a terminal run:
xbacklight -set 60
This will set 60% brightness, if compatible with your video card.

Foxitreader URL launch fix
*** Edit 17/2/11 (http fix is OK; www fix needed amending) *** Foxitreader is a great pdf reader - can open embedded URLs. Default result in Puppy was to launch default text editor instead of browser. Other distros didn't have that trouble. Problem is in /usr/local/bin/defaulthandler. Remove lines 6...

Brother HL-2170w - our HL2040 driver works well
Barry's HL-2040/1250 driver works well with this much newer wireless laser printer in Pup 421 & Quirky 1.2 tests. Many other Brother cups drivers have margin errors - if they work at all.

Is Great
This is fantastic. All my Compaq C61 hardware works. To install on older machines, I replaced ondemand cpu scaling with conservative, due to temperature warnings. Fine now.

Is Good - just 1 issue
This is good. Some nice options. One problem with my Compaq C61 - Intel G45 soundcard detected & plays, but mics don't go - neither onboard or plugin type. Alsamixer doesn't show boost.

From your other pc (with an SD reader/writer attached), boot the live cd, then ensure SD card formatted as FAT 16 or 32 and boot flag set (via gparted, in system menu). Then, via Universal installer (setup menu), install to USB Flash. Then insert in EEE pc, and boot. When ASUS logo shows, press Esc ...

A Galah
A mid-20s person (my kids age) referred to the former nick's crudity, as did a comedian on tv (apparently), so here's me thinking 'you old fogey - you've unwittingly fouled up again'. Now I've made a complete galah of myself. D'oh!

Changed name
I apologize to any I've offended by using the name 'downsouth'. I meant 'down the south of the planet', not what (so I'm informed) is the crude meaning most people think of. javascript:emoticon('')
