Without Grub in Puppy, Fedora's grub.conf had title Puppy 5.2 root (hd0,2) kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 pmedia=atahd initrd /boot/initrd.gz With grub in Puppy, title Puppy 5.2 rootnoverity (hd0,2) chainloader +1 Why grub4dos? I've never heard of that, but the name suggests a Microsoft partiti...

After actually stopping to think, I realised that by copying initrd and the sfs files, I manually created a frugal install! So, I started again. I re-installed from scratch and followed the instructions on what to put in Fedora's grub.conf. The result on rebooting was Kernel panic : not synching : V...

I've just made the experiment of removing the sfs file and attempting to boot into Puppy. I got lupu_520.sfs not found Dropping out to init-ramdisk console /bin/sh: can't access tty So it won't run without the sfs. Does this mean that when I asked for a full install I got a frugal one? And it certai...

Full install: universal installer forgot initrd, sfs file.
I ran the installer and put Puppy on my "guest" partition. I didn't install grub, as I would be keeping the existing grub. When I got to making an entry for Puppy, I found that the installer had only installed vmlinux: no initrd. I copied that and tried to boot Puppy: oops, no sfs file. No...

Lucid Puppy 5 keyboard configuration unavailable
When I installed Puppy (full install), I selected a UK keyboard. If I run the keyboard wizard , it shows UK as installed, but it isn't. Using setxkbmap confirms that I have a US map installed (and the dummies' one too, with no foreign letters). The xkb configuration manager also fails. If I click on...

More on Flash cookies
One poster mentioned the online Flash settings manager. It doesn't work, at least for me. It creates a file in .adobe that sets the size of the cookie cash, so theoretically setting it to zero should solve the problem. But I found that cookies were still being stored, in either of ~/macromedia/Flash...

Success! I'm making my first post from Puppy. It was the vga setting that was making the installer hang. Once I removed it, I got a complaint that it couldn't find an sfs file. Once I copied that from the live CD to the HD [slight bug in the installer there], all was well. Obviously, Puppy uses the ...

It's impossible to know what proportion of personal computers run Linux, because most of these computers will have been bought with Windows on them. Surveys generally rely on websites checking the OS via the browser, but that obviously raises the question of what sites are being used. A site appeali...

Installation problem [solved]
I've been trying out various small distros for use on an as-yet-unbought cheap laptop. I liked Puppy, and so I decided to install on the hard drive of my desktop to get familiar with it. I used the installer and then amended grub.conf (aka menu.lst) in Fedora. When I tried to boot Puppy, the compute...
