Besides most of the banks I deal with a prime example is my health insurance company. Their secure sites with personalized info, claims and the like, will only work with IE. A false user agent won't work. I no longer do business online with them -- now it's the telephone which I'm sure costs them m...

I will just take a wild guess and assume that i cannot shut it down since i use a browser to browse the internet. bernie, good info, but how do you watch videos? Are you using some kind of alternative? I don't watch videos except ra...

Klaus does teach at the university level but maybe part-time -- his rank is visiting professor which definitely means no tenure. I think his primary profession and most of his income is from being a self-employed IT consultant. He was a member of a UNIX club in college and Knoppix grew out of that.

Bernie, Sounds like you're having some fun with this, and you have an interest in Hindu studies, and maybe Ann Rand? I'm confused about the cult thing though. Who's the leader, Barry? I've studied all the major religions and many minor ones. Almost all are complete nonsense but still I feel Buddhis...

or a browser that lies and reports it is IE. Yes, isn't that interesting. Real browsers can display the page fine, but Microsoft says "oh, no. you're not allowed to use another browser. That wouldn't be fair - then Billy wouldn't be able to say he has the biggest market share." It's not M...

So maybe Knopper did something to Knoppix after version 6.2 or a bit earlier that made it more user friendly? You only asked Mr. Martin but I'll express my opinion anyway. The CD version got less user friendly starting with 6 because more and different things were left out. I'm playing with the inf...

[quote="Bernie_by_the_Sea"]Your imagination runs wild. I have never spent a single cent to keep XP going. I’ve probably spent less than an hour in eight years keeping it going. I’ve never spent a single cent on virus software. I’ve never spent a single cent on malware detection. I’ve never...

When I said MS sets the sets the standards for browsing I didn't mean the standards for browsers -- I meant for browsing the web. IE determines how web browsing works and looks. No one in his right mind has a web page that won't work with IE. Some sites I use, particularly for banking and financial ...

WhoDo wrote:What is "mainstream" in the world of Linux anyway? And who the hell cares? Until you define what you mean by "mainstream" in the context of Linux (not Windows) then you have no traction in your argument.
I have no “argument.

OpenSource will always be second rate ???! The best software is generally open source... or proprietary freeware made by someone as a hobby. Certainly none of that *&$# sold by Microsoft. I'm sure Windows isn't too bad if all you want to do is watch Youtube and use Facebook... but not if you ne...

Re: What will Linux become?

My brother did go the three PhD route -- physics, then math, then computer science. That's probably pointless. You could migrate back and forth between those fields, should you choose, with just one of them... There were several factors in play here. First he liked being a student. He was a long ha...

What does "mainstream" mean anyhow? Puppy is consistently in the Top 10 at Distrowatch; sounds pretty "mainstream" to me. Absolutely totally meaningless. Do you know how Distrowatch determines rankings? By one and only one thing -- hits on its own webpages. A hit on the Puppy pa...

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. But wasn't the internet created and funded by those big corporations initially? The Internet was created and funded by the U.S. Department of Defense. The idea was to have something that would survive a first strike nuclear attack. It wasn't until 1995 that fu...

Given older handicapped notebook

I asked around for an older notebook to play with installing Puppy. I was given a Dell Inspiron 1200 (1.30G Celeron, 256MB RAM, 30GB HD, DVD/CD burner, WinXP Media, 14.1" display). The lady bought it new in 2005. She said she hasn’t used it for a couple of years. She didn’t want it anymore beca...

NO leadership = poor leadership An interesting concept. So where does that leave us?... (yes, by that, I do mean you and I... ) It leaves us with an interesting toy that's never going to become a mainstream desktop. Puppy is the easiest distro I've seen to tinker with and make dramatic and in...

Re: What will Linux become?

You have a lot of interesting and cool ideas, but you seem like quite the frosty individual on the internet, so I really don't have a desire to chat with you. Sad you didn't approach the converation with a bit more humility. We could have a great discussion, if it didn't have to be an argument. I t...

I also do not see it on the system tray since i removed it a few days back, so hopefully its on and running. I also disab...
