yr1945, Semme made a good point about trying another CD. These players do go bad, sometimes just partially. One of my desktop machines with a CD player that used to boot anything put in it will now boot nothing. Data CDs and music CDs work even if a few bits are corrupt. But, a bootloader is totally...

Stemsee,

I second your opinion of Makulu Linux 7 xfce. If it had the forum support that Puppy has we would be in trouble. It is now #48 on Distrowatch and climbing. I boot its live CD occasionally just to admire it.

OscarTalks and mikeb, Thanks for joining in. Nouveau certainly has my support. The folks at X.Org Foundation, and freedesktop.org have made and still are making a lot of effort in developing a good free and open solution for our nVidia cards. They have a little program called REnouveau which we can ...

Reason for removing nouveau

My intent was to install the nvidia-legacy96-driver-43.43.23-k3.9.11.pet from catdude. It matches my nVidia GeForce4 MX440 (NV17) card. I have done this on my Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 full install box although with a slightly different nVidia card and driver, with good success. As mikeb pointed out the nVi...

How do you get rid of nouveau in Precise 5.7.1?

The nouveau video driver in a full install of Precise 5.7.1 is determined to hang on. The boot manager configuration does not work. I can select "nouveau" in the left pane and move it to the right pane but when I click "OK" it reappears in the left pane and also remains in the ri...

ePDFView gone in a flash - Solved

I have verified that ePDFView works as expected when run from the Live CD of Precise 5.7.1. Clicking a .pdf file causes ePDFView to open it properly. Probably removing/replacing ePDFView in my full install will fix it. So, I am marking this post as solved. Starhawk, I tried evince and liked it, too....

ePDFView gone in a flash - Solved

In Precise Puppy 5.7.1 full install, clicking on a .pdf file opens a window which goes away immediately. Running it in a terminal like: "epdfview somefile.pdf" shows that the result is a segmentation fault. However, ePDFView works fine when using its File -> Open menu. ePDFView is set as t...

Utilities to upgrade

Folks, I have found one possible answer to my own question - PeaZip. It will handle the xz compressed files and create them, too, plus about 15 other formats. I have made a PET of version 5.5.2 and tried it on Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 and 5.2.8.7 and it seems to work quite well. I can post the PET where ev...

Utilities to upgrade

XArchive 0.2.8-6 and undeb/unrpm (based on 1.10.18 archive backend) are standard utilities in Lucid 5.2.8 through 5.2.8.7. They cannot handle the .xz format. For that matter, the excellent XArchiver 0.5.2svn-r28705 from code-master ttuuxxx doesn't recognize it, either. .xz is becoming a standard. Wi...

Just downloaded lupusuper4 Puppy and did a full install. The box has a Pentium 4 at 2.4GHz, 1 Gb of ram and 60 Gb hard drive. Everything works as advertised! Oui,

Linux From Scratch has a following and some developers who tend to stick around. I for one have dabbled in it when trying to understand how some part of Linux works. To my own discredit I have not used it to make a full system. That certainly would have advanced me considerably.

Mystmaiden,

UEFI can be a pain because of the many steps and how easy it is to actually go in a circle accomplishing nothing. Here is how I disabled Secure Boot on a friend's computer:

1. Access the Charms bar with Win+C then click the “Settings

Lobster, Nice to see another Puppy user jumping off the deep end! I have used Cinelerra on Lucid 5.2.8 for quite a while (3 years +) with good results. Mikeslr,

I also lament the loss of the Well-Minded search. There were some posts at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=92090 on this topic. Some guys there made some useful suggestions. I am trying some of them myself.

EDIT: Sorry, I mistyped your name, now corrected.

Motorcity, Semme has pointed you in the right direction. Firefox does not have a printer driver, nor does any browser. They depend upon the driver software in the operating system. In your case it would be CUPS for Linux. If the CD that you have came from Star Micronics then CUPS will be on it and t...

Tuneturkey, A good first stop for working with MIDI on Linux is http://www.midi-howto.com/ . Some information there will help with MIDI on Linux in general. Most of what appears there will also apply to Puppy 5.2.8. Puppy does not have an intrinsic MIDI handler per se. MIDI gets handled indirectly v...
