Try boot option acpi=off or acpi=force Try with live CD At boot screen hit F2 key enter option Puppy acpi=off or puppy acpi=force acpi=off did the trick. It runs flawless now, thanks! Yes, I've tried 5.3.1 which shut down just fine. However my wifi did not work in that version.

I get the same result when exiting to prompt.

Specs:
Processor: IntelCore i7-2670QM @ 2.20GHz
Memory: 8GB
Graphic: Gforce GTX 560M
Wifi: Atheros Ar9300 Driver: ath9k
USB: 2GB
