I recently discovered that my iPhone has a private browsing mode that can be kept on at all times. Wish I had known that from the beginning!
Now I just wish it had an adblock!

I don't think the point here is value for money or even saving money. It's more for people who like to build, tinker and accomplish things. And maybe for certain use cases people might want the level of control that building their own laptop gives them, potentially uses where the lack of performance...

It's no good complaining about it. You DO have to assume you're being tracked unless you're taking steps otherwise. I don't mean to be harsh, I mean it's certainly valid to complain about online tracking but I don't think it helps at a personal level -- you have to take steps to protect yourself. Pe...

Heh. Opposite for me. My Acer is what I turn on when I need INTERNET NOW. It's a great machine in that respect. It's very like a tablet, in fact, only I don't find that the tablet form factor works for me at all -- had one, tried it, not interested for now. Later maybe. The C710 isn't my ONLY machin...

Yes, the C720 has lost some physical features like the Ethernet jack and the VGA. You are wireless only (MAYBE it supports Ethernet over USB adapter, but I doubt it), and HDMI for a monitor. The bigger downside is you cannot upgrade the RAM. 4GB is plenty but better make that decision when you buy i...

Well, you need to start with a smaller Puppy, first of all! Modern ones have grown (mostly, as I understand it, because of the kernel growth. But there are likely other reasons ...) I use Puppy Lucid 528 on my older computers. It's quite small. You can go back further for even smaller sizes, but the...

I don't know the C710 (I have one) will be easy to use with Puppy. I don't think it has seabios, which, I think means no USB booting. If you want to run Linux I'd recommend Crouton instead. The C710 has a very plucky Celeron 847 in it but it's a generation behind the C720 1037 and underclocked. (Whe...

I don't predict the same thing you do, Ted Dog. Although, I admit you could easily be as right as I could be wrong! I think Microsoft is on the verge of a resurgence. They have seen the threats from iPad, Android, Chromebooks and are responding. The new OS looks like it's going to provide a lot of u...

Windows Secure Boot .... it's back!
Yes boys and girls, Microsoft is now saying that OEMs will have the choice to include OR NOT include the off switch for secure boot. I stopped following secure boot details after it was found that you could actually just turn it off. I know there were some Linux distros that were able to work with s...

Many OS can control the fan, but that should usually (always?) be overridden by the BIOS. IE, if the fan is working, it should spin when the computer gets hot. If this were an old laptop I'd say, blast it out with compressed air. Fans are fundamentally electrical motors. If they're clean, and they'r...

A discussion like this is going to be illegal if Obama's new laws on cybercrime come to pass -- contributing to distributing illegally obtained information will be punishable as an illegal act, even if you just share illegally obtained info that's already public. In many ways I like Obama's final-te...
