I lost some settings, that's true. But it took only a minute or two to restore them. When I tried to copy /root (on an earlier attempt at re-mastering) something went a bit wobbly. I got all kinds of error messages.

I wasn't happy with my first re-master attempt so I went back to Square One and did it over again. Following nic007's advice I copied everything from my /etc folder into the /tmp/etc of Barry's re-master program (then deleted the .XLOADED file from /tmp/etc ) and that captured 99.99 percent of my se...

G'day smokey01, libernet didn't run out of space on his Savefile. His pinboard just vanished. This is the fourth time it's been reported on the Forum in the last 4 days. It also happened to me, mikegt4 and wimpy. The only common factor is that we were all running ext2 Savefiles. Very strange. This T...

The easiest thing is probably to start over. In the below Thread, mikeb explains you can go into your borked Pupsave*****.2fs file and find out what packages were installed, as a guide to setting up your new Pupsave in ext3.

If you are using an ext2 Savefile you might be better off reconstructing your Savefile as ext3 or ext4. I think I'm right in saying that all the breakages which have happened recently have involved an ext2 Savefile.

This has happened to others (myself included) in recent days. The advice given on this thread might be helpful:

Yes in my ignorance, until about 2 days ago, I was using the ext2 filesystem in my Savefiles. Now I use ext3.

Try doing a Frugal Install to a folder on the Hard Drive called /puppy431 and see if that speeds things up. You could do that and still boot from the CD. If it runs faster, then you might amend Grub to include the 431 installation. I assume you've still got the Swap Partition?

Hi slavvo67, I keep all the .PET files I use in a backup system so I've got them, even they are no longer available for download. I'm totally OCD about my backups, so I keep them in 15 locations  (that's an exaggeration, but only a slight exaggeration). Barry's re-master script works OK, but ...

@mikeb Thanks for the advice. I went with ext2 three years ago because, at the time, I was a refugee from Windows and in Windows you use a password to Log In, so I wanted a password in Puppy. Hence I ended up using a ext2 Savefile. Now I know better, I'd go for an ext3 Savefile. @wimpy Like mikeb sa...

Hi bigpup, The thing I am wondering is why you even have a drivers-backup directory and why the system is trying to use something from it. Normally it only needs the drivers directory for Xorg. '/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers This may or may not be relevant, but this past couple of days several Puppy...

Hi wimpy,
It used to be said that if a Savefile goes bigger than 1.8 GB there can sometimes be problems. They mention it in this Thread:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 19&start=4

But there seems to be some confusion about what the exact limit is.

The built-in re-master program gives an option right at the end of the process, to burn a CD. But if you choose that option it refuses to burn the CD, then you have to start the process all over again. Anyway I got there in the end.

Thanks once again.

Hi Blackfish,
If you could give the specs for those computer systems, someone might be able to recommend a Puppy for them. For each system please list:
- CPU details
- amount of RAM
- Hard drive size

Hi nic007, Everything is in my pup_525.sfs file except for about 40 MB of non-essential settings (stuff which is nice to have, but which I could live without if I had to). An example of the non-essential stuff is the "enable mouse-pad tapping" setting. If it's not there, I would simply use...

Something weird's going on. Yesterday I experienced the same problem as mikegt4. I was surfing the Web when the screen flickered and I lost my Wallpaper and drive icons. After recovering from backup I followed nic007's advice to remaster a Puppy CD with all my favourite stuff in it and run a minimal...

Keeping a copy of your Savefile achieves the same thing and with the size of USB Flash Drives these days, keeping a copy of a 512 MB Savefile is no great hardship.

The message you describe relates to the "Pinboard". Puppy doesn't have a desktop directory, instead it has a pinboard. What you describe happened to me once and soon afterwards I discovered my hard drive was knocking on death's door. I never worked out if the two things were related, but e...

I have seen Full Installs of Puppy 5.25 that booted marginally faster than a Frugal of 5.25 on the same (Pentium 4 laptop) PC. But I went with the Frugal anyway, because with a Frugal Install all I need is to backup the Savefile and that, plus the CD, is a backup of the entire system. On the other h...
