With only 256 mb of RAM you would need a Linux Swap partition of about 512 mb. This applies to a DSL or Puppy installation. There are 2 Retro versions of Puppy 4.31 available from here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-4.3.1/special-puppies/ If you want to try Puppy, I'd start with the ...

Hi Delmar, If you can add RAM definitely do so. Or you could try adding a Swap Partition of 512 mb to 1 gb. To make a 1 gb Swap Partition on the Hard Drive: - boot Puppy from the CD. At the first pause in the boot sequence press F2 and type puppy pfix=ram - click Menu > System > Gparted - select the ...

In the very first post on this thread GBertolet describes his/her computer as: 550 MHZ processor, 20 GB hard drive, and 768 meg of ram With those specs, GBertolet may have better luck with an older version of Puppy. I would start at Puppy 5.28 and, if that doesn't work out, go back to the "Retro ...

In Irfanview you can "batch process" a whole stack of images at once. As for running a hotkey from the Context Menu, like Semme says, you probably need help from someone who knows about writing Scripts and that isn't me!!!

You could run a Windows program called Irfanview under Wine (the Windows emulator) in Puppy. To rotate an image in Irfanview you would just press the "R" button, to rotate left press "L", to flip horizontally press "H", to flip vertically press "V". I used to run Irfanview in Wine a couple of years ...

@GBertolet The Puppy XP 5.28 derivative you have is one I'm not familiar with and if it's not allowing you to re-size your Personal Save file, or copy the Personal Save to a backup of some sort, then you might be better off installing Puppy 5.28 which is available from here: http://ftp.nluug.nl ...

Hi GBertolet, I would like to figure out if possible to speed things up a little more. Reading your first Post, I see your computer specs are: 550 MHZ processor, 20 GB hard drive, and 768 meg of ram. You have enough RAM that you don't need a Swap Partition, but with a 550 MHZ processor, performance ...

A year ago I managed to get Handbrake working on Puppy Slacko, which is a Frugal Install. I agree with the others. It doesn't cost anything to keep XP. I downloaded CloneZilla (for free) and made a "backup" image of my XP Partition, so if XP ever self-immolates I can easily restore it.

If you ever want to update BIOS you might need WinDoze to do it.

Keep in mind that if you are running off a USB Stick, on an old PC it's probably USB 1, which is 40 times slower than USB 2. Things would run much quicker if you could do a Frugal Install to the Hard Drive.

@Wolfgange You need to find a Puppy with the right Linux Kernel for your hardware. Before giving up on Puppy altogether, I would suggest trying the Retro versions of Puppy 4.3.1: pup-431-k2.6.21.7-scsi-intel_modems.iso pup-431-k2.6.25.16-intel_modems.iso They are available to download from here ...

With 256 MB of RAM, you should be running a Swap File or Swap Partition of 256 to 512 MB.

Puppies that I've found run well on older systems are Puppy Lucid 525 and Puppy 431. 431 comes in 3 different Kernels and one of the 3 will usually work with older systems.
