if you are running Puppy, you should not be affected by DOS or Windows viruses, unless you are running WINE or DOSemu or QEMU something similar Interesting, because I do intend to use WINE where necessary. Has anyone had any typical virus/malware issues when using WINE that they can share? (and BTW...

Puppy over DOS - malware risks?
After my last little dabble with NTFS/Wine, I decided to reformat my hard-drive, install a FAT32 file system, install Win98 (which - honest to god - managed to crash on initial boot. WTF!). I killed it and installed XP instead, leaving the FAT 32 / DOS 7 system underneath. (DOS is my security blanke...

How to get Gxine to see .m3u playlists?: SOLVED
How do I get Gxine to see my mp3 playlist, created in Windows (eg: all_songs.m3u, slow_songs.m3u etc)? It's a pain in the ass to have to recreate all the various playlist, so advice would be appreciated!

Solved!
Hi guys, just an update :) Booting from WinXp disc, pressing F2, choosing repair (R), then running fixmbr 100% solved the problem! Thanks to norsiwel who suggested that and thanks to everyone else. Sage - you're quite right. It probably is best to build your own: at least that way you know what goes...

All other bootable media work fine. I can boot from DVD (as per Live CD of puppy) and from USB pen drive. No idea why the WinXP install disk refuses to boot. Perhaps it needs access to the hard drive to create temporary files, which it can't find? Just guessing: XP came pre-installed on the machine ...

Honesty - because I'm not computer savvy enough to crack open the case, figure out which cable goes where, rip out a hard drive (which may or may not be compatable) from an old PC, copy contents across etc. In any case, the 'next best' pc in the house has a hard-drive that is only just 10gb, so it w...

Is USB dsl modem won't work, would something like this?
Hi all I've searched the forums, and the general consensus seems to be - external, USB ADSL modems have a tough time working under Puppy, if at all, due to lacking drivers. Mine certainly doesn't seem to want to. (I have a netcomm ADSL - feel free to prove me wrong! Here's a description of it http:/...

Hi norsiwel I do indeed have the XP install disk. However, when I tried using it, it didn't boot into anything, and still gave me the same PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT error. I will attempt the steps you have outlined and report back! Does anyone have any other ideas? Sage I'd love to get rid of WinXp (t...

Catastrophic disk failure – help! (SOLVED)
I wonder if anyone can help me out here. I was messing around with a Live CD of the latest puppylinux (2.12), and was using WINE to try emulating some programs. It was working great until WINE (0.9.9 IIRC) crashed and froze the PC. I had to hard reset (ie: power off) to get out of it. Thinking that ...
